Guest guest
It governs our outer life and inner life. For inner life, the religion stresses the surrender of the ego in Spirit (God). A fundamental belief is that "I am not the body, mind, etc. I am the Atma (Self)". Different sects differ in how we interpret the "Atma", but we all agree that the temporary ego is not our real Self. Thus the religion aims at a basic change in perspective of our Self in relation to the existence the mind associates it with, and our outer religious efforts, whether of deep meditation, of difficult yoga practices or devotion to the Supreme Personal God, all guide the person to release from the ego selfish body-bound state into a natural all-embracing state of Peace. As someone outside the Hindu religion, you should understand the outer elements of our religion as having a higher end such as stated above. It is this inner common purpose that has gradually evolved various practices in order to suit and accomodate to people of different outer tastes.
