As there is no inflammatory process, the term osteoarthrosis is not used. It is classified into two groups: Primary osteoarthrosis (where there is no previous pathology) and secondary osteoarthrosis (when it is secondary to some previous pathology). It is usually occurs in weight bearing joints like hips and knees. Obesity is predisposing factor. Most commonly affected joint is knee. Primary osteoarthrosis of knee is the common problem and occurs usually in those in those above 50 years. Local symptoms are pain, swelling, restricted movements, inability to sit in Indian toilet and stiffness. Secondary osteoarthosis in the knee joints alterations in the congruity of articular surfaces due to various reasons such as Malunion of fractures involving articular surfaces of tibia, femur, patella and Malalignment of bones. Clinical features on examinations are woolen joints, tenderness, (Pain) in joint line, movements are restricted, in late case there is lateral bowing of legs at the knee. Radiological examinations gives helping hand for diagnosis. In Ayurveda the treatment is known as Asthigata Vatha. When vatha gets located in bones of legs and joints, it produces severe pain and weakness. Panchakarma thereapy involves: Ahyaga Swedanam (oil massage & steam) Pizhichil, dhara (pouring warm oil over body or locally) Pathrapatola or pindasweda and mild purgation.
