Re: EGO ~ Amma (#9) on the nature of ego :

0363."Mere believers, as distinguished from a true devotee, usually

pray too. They may use the same terms, and they may engage in the

same manner of supplication. In fact the words they use can be

identical. But they are just uttering words, meaningless words. They

do not truly pray from the heart; they babble. Out of fear or in

order to fulfill their desires, they say something, which according to

them is prayer. But in reality they are suggesting to God, and even

instructing Him, that these are the things they want and those are the

things they don't want." - Vol.5, p31

0364.[Mother is talking about those who pray insincerely]. "They say,

`Give me what I desire and what I like. Do not give those things that

I dislike.' How can this be prayer? This is just trying to establish

supremacy over God. This is questioning God's omniscient nature. The

so-called believer is saying indirectly that he knows better than God

what is best for himself and what is not. Can we call this prayer?

No, we cannot. It is just an exposition of his ego. He still has his

own likes and dislikes. His goal is to fulfill his desires. Desire

is the central point around which his prayer revolves." - Vol.5, p32

0365."But if the goal is to realize the Supreme Being, you should

become completely egoless. That requires self-effort. The sadhak

himself must pray sincerely for the removal of his negative

tendencies. He should work hard. This prayer is not to achieve

anything or to fulfill any desire. It is to go beyond all

achievements; it is to transcend all desires. It is an intense

longing of the sadhak to return to his original and real abode. He

feels and becomes aware of the burden of his own ego, and this feeling

creates a strong urge to unburden its heaviness. It is this urge

which expresses itself as prayer." - Vol.5, p33

"In olden days everyone practised truth. The wife lived for the

husband and the husband for the wife. They had the fruit of truth

and self-sacrifice. They had an all-surrendering attitude, courage,

love, righteousness, and justice. " - Vol. 1 p346

Om Hrim Namah Sivaya,

Dear brothers and sisters, Amma says it's good to know the nature of

things and to use them properly according to their functionality.

Perhaps, the thing that is most misunderstood and used

inappropriately is the ego. So, I searched the Dear Amma text and

extracted all of Amma's Words on the nature of ego( about 14

pages !!! )

Of course, Amma's most favorite word is LOVE which is our true

nature. But, ego is what we identify with; it's our false nature.

So, Amma's Words on the nature of ego is to help us surrender our

false nature( ego ) and awaken to our true nature( LOVE ).

I will continue to post a few of Amma's quotes at a time; anyone

wishing to receive OFFLINE all 14 pages( Amma's Words on Ego.doc ),

pleas email me OFFLINE. Thanks.

There are, of course, many other of Amma's Words on the nature of ego

not contained in Dear Amma text. I encourage others to share( post )

these and any other comments and experiences.

Thank you very, very much.

Amma Bless,

amarnath
