THE WAY OUT OF CONSTIPATION

Jagannath Chatterjee

Constipation has become a part of our lives today. This is because of three things, the doctors say. Hurry, Curry & Worry. In our lives we probably cannot do without these things. But we can compensate by devoting some time every day or week to reduce the impact they have on us.

Taking two to three glasses of water on waking up helps clean our stomach and irrigate our bowels. One glass could have a lemon squeezed in and a pinch of pepper. It is better if the water is lukewarm. Morning tea/coffee/cigarette is a strict no-no for those with constipation as it only worsens the condition in the long run. Newspaper in the toilet? That would only induce you to spend more time in the toilet than need be. Constipation for such people can only be a blessing not a curse.

We need to have a morning walk everyday. Not the type of usual morning walk that we resort to, walking fast, disinterested in what we see around us, thinking about our office or home chores, with earphones listening to loud music, or gupshupping with our friends. The walk needs to be relaxed, in an open space, observing the environment around us, practicing mindfulness, communicating with the trees, the mongrels, the birds in the sky, taking deep breaths of (preferably) clean morning air, and feeling each part of our body as we go along.

Take a oil message before your bath. That will help your skin as well as help in blood circulation. Devote a little more time to your stomach and abdomen massaging the area vigorously and with pressure. Message from up downwards. After the first flush of water, repeat the message, lightly this time, across the whole body. While drying up use the towel to scrub the skin thoroughly.

Eat unhurriedly. Try to chew and not gulp things down while simaltaneously watching the TV and skimming through the paper. Try home made spices in your food to avoid coluring agents. Take plenty of fruits, vegetables and salads. A glass of watered down skimmed milk, some curd. Cut down on polished rice, salt, sugar and white flour. Among oils, mustard oil and coconut oil is good for health. Avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils. The "hydrogenation" is to increase shelf life, not to take care of your health. Cut down on non vegetarian food.

Walk, don't run to the bus or auto stand.

In the office avoid the frequent cups of tea/cofee. Carry a water bottle along and take sips of water. You can squeeze two lemons into a 250ml bottle for taste. Avoid the fried snacks, cakes, pastries etc in the cafetaria. Take your own home made food comprising a few chapatis, a vegetable and a salad. Don't take a cold drink afterwards. You will spoil the whole digestion process if you do. A cup of tea (not coffee) if you cannot avoid the urge.

In the evenings take a glass or two of freshly prepared fruit juice. Ensure that the water is clean. Refuse the ice. If you are feeling hungry opt for idlis or dosha, they are the least harmful. Always take your food in a standard restaurant, don't eat from roadside stalls. Wash your hands thoroughly before taking any food. Always ensure you fill the engine of your body with good quality fuel to avoid starting trouble...sorry...constipation !!

At night take a light dinner early on. The nights are used by the body for elimination and not digestion. So eat just that much that won't necessitate a trip to the kitchen in the middle of the night. Go to bed by 10:00 PM. Ten to one is the time necessary for the body to eliminate all waste from the body. If you go to bed later than 10.00 be ready for those sluggish mornings. If you get up at night take a glass of water before turning in again. Get up by 5:00 AM.

At any time do not suppress the urges of elimination. Do not put off visits to the bathroom. Do not eat or drink while your bladder or intestine is full.

Ayurvedic remedies:

----------------------------

A spoonful of Panchasakara Churna in a cup of warm water before retiring to bed.

Other remedies are Trifala Churna, any combination of Senna + Bael.

Homeopathic Remedies:
