These are little notes written by Shri ShriRamadesikachar on the

Azhvar pasurams of SheIBhoomidevIsametaOppiliappan. Some of these

notes are very interesting and I have tried to give the meaning of

these notes.

The translations of the pasurams by ShrIMadhavakkannan are available

at the thiruviNNagar website, www.oppiliappan.org.

Also, the Tamil translation of the sthalapuranam as written by ShrI

shrIRAmadesikachar is also available as an etext. Bhagavatas who

would like to receive this in PDF format, please send me an email. I

will be happy to share this with them. If you would like the original

Sanskrit version also, please mention this in your email, I will send

this as well.

This concludes the series on the sthalapuranam.

Notes on Azhwar literature

These are the little notes written by VaikunTavasi ShrIramadesikachar

for the stanzas by Thirumangai mannan on the pasurams.

Notes onf 6.1 starting VanDuNu naRumalar:

Since there are so many divine kshetrams in this world, EmperumAn

detained Azhvar here. But, Azhvar thought that even though there are

so many divyadesams, this world is full of temptations that attract

our senses. He emphasizes his distaste for the life here and affirms

his devotion to Him repeatedly in this decad.

6.2 Even after repeated requests Emperuman did not take Azhvar into

His jyoti, so Azhvar was disappointed and sad. So, he thinks " If I

describe to Him the hardships I undergo in this world and the cruel

hells that may follow these, then maybe He will take pity on me and

grant my wish" and tells Him that he is afraid of the results of this

`samsaric' life and that He has to accept him, and relates all this

with great apprehension.

6.3 Since Azhvar's wish was not granted after the last two decads,

Azhvar thinks that EmperumAn might be thinking that Azhvar still has a

little bit of liking for this smasaram and hence wants to test him a

little bit more; and probably wants to know Azhvar's intentions more

clearly. So, once again Azhvar tells him that he abhors this samsaram

and clearly states the "purushartham" he wants and says that all he

yearns for is to live under His sacred feet in His Kshetram.

Here there are additional notes added by the author

ShriRAmadesikachar: Nammazhvar has devoted the decad 6.3 to

Thiruvinnagarappan. Hence Thirumangaiazhvar also did not stop with the

first two decades, 6.1 and 6.2,but went on for a third decad. So, it

is an interesting tidbit that both Shrisukthis have the 6.3 decad in

praise of Thiruvinnagarappan.

Notes on Nalguravum:

Nammazhvar turned his back on EmperumAn since He did not come to

himeven after singing the previous decad "minniDai maDAvAr' He

decided that he will have nothing to do with Him since it was His

habit to ignore His Bhathas when they wanted Him and come to them when

they were angry. But Thirvinnagarappan pacified Azhvar by showing him

His Handsome form and won him over. Azhwar realizes that the Lord is

just amazing – he can bring together things that can never be brought

together and are opposite in nature and says that His qualities are to

be wondered at.

Another interesting note on PoigaiAzhvar's mudal tiruvandAdi pAsuram 77:

vEngaDamum viNNagarum veHkAvum aHkaada

poongiDangin neeLkOval ponnagarum - nAnkiDattum

ninRanirunDAn kiDandAn naDandAne

EnRAl kEDumAm iDAr.

Note:

When Azhvar says IrundAn, he mentions Vaikundam – but none of the

Azhvars have used the word "viNNagar" to refer to shrIVaikunTam. So it

is appropriate to assume that Azhvar referred to this divyadesam when

he said `viNNagar" – which means that this EmperumAn gave darshan to

AzhvAr in "veeRRirunda tirukkolam" – the state of "being seated".
