Guest guest
The Editor, Indian Express Sir, Say no to spinal surgery: This refers to the most controversial topic of surgical operations in case of ruptured disks in the lower back where opinions of various expert orthopedics often differ. The latest study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) and reported in the New York Times (IE, Pune, Nov. 24) has made confusion worse confounded. The two-year study comparing surgery with those who did not undergo the operation, found out both the groups reported marked improvement in their symptoms in nearly 2000 patients. With such a finding, the patients having agonizing sciatica pains do not know what to do, whether to wait and bear the pain or go for surgery. Dr. Steven R Garfin, Chairman of the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Diego says, “You don’t have to rush in for surgery. Time is usually your ally, not your enemy”. In India, the Nature Cure and Spinal Rehabilitation Centre (NCSRC), Pune has studied not 2,000 but 20,000 cases of ruptured-disks, not in a short time of two years as in case of the US study published in JAMA, but for 20 years. Almost all the patients got well within a short time of a week or two, sometimes, even instantaneously by doing the exercises that pull back the sciatica nerves to their original position releasing the pressure on the nerves. This writer who happens to be the Founder Director of the NCSRC had even demonstrated this method of releasing the pressure on the sciatica nerves at a demo-cum-cure session at Long Island, New York in June 2004 and the patient had reported immediate relief from her sciatica pain. These yoga-type nature-cure exercises were also demonstrated at similar camps held at Staten Island and many places in New Jersey with similar results. One of the patients from Manhattan had even made a short video film of the exercises and had sent it to his father who lives in California as his Father’s Day gift, wishing him happier and healthier life during his evening years. Spinal surgery is very costly as well as risky. Most of the patients who came for second opinion to the NCSRC were cured to enjoy normal life sans any complications or the pain without surgery. Hence it is necessary to broadcast these findings worldwide so that no one goes for the highly invasive procedure of spine surgeries unless the nature-cure exercises fail. But so far, they have not failed, a lesson that should be learnt by all spinal surgeons who are ever ready with their scalpels. Needless to mention, in US alone, nearly 20 billion dollars are spent annually on spinal surgeries with such doubtful results. For more info, please visit www.atbsnr.com. S. M.
