Guest guest
Amma gave a question&answer before Bhajans on Sunday and on Tuesday evening. (I couldn't be there Monday to report). Sunday night someone asked a question about spiritual materialism, and Amma spoke about a lot of different aspects of the situation. Last night, there were two questions. Although first a mother raised her hand, and Mother told her she already knew the answer... she studied so many scriptures and spiritual texts for the last fifty years. To stop asking questions! And then She also added, do you need a bag of sugar to know what sweet is? No, you only need a taste. She then looked around at us and asked if anyone had a question, a serious question. A sweet young man jumped to his feet, and told Mother that people told him he had a very loud personality, an intense, fast personality. Swami asked, "A loud voice?" And the questioner clarified, no a loud personality. That he talked to fast, that he was impatient, and that he wanted to know what he could do to slow that down. Amma began the answer by telling him: "You are very handsome! You are a very attractive person!" And then Swami added, "But you need to lose a few pounds!" (Which was a joking thing, because he I guess also enjoys good foods.) And then Swami clarified that was his comment, not Amma's, and they shared a joke and he was laughing so hard he could hardly continue. Mother asked, "How many people have told you that? How many people this week?" And the questioner thought about it and said, "One." She told us all that we shouldn't think so much about what other people think of us. That you can't do that in this world. And that he was fine, he was ok, he was handsome. Given that reassurance, however, if he wanted to do a practice to "mellow" his vibe, he could or should go, for one hour a week, one hour a day would be nice, but at least one hour a week, go to the ocean, or some remote place, and practice doing EVERYTHING in very verrry verrrrry slow motion. So try lifting his arm verrrry verrrry slowly. She kept motioning that with Her own arm (lifting it upward like you would imagine a motion of your hand as an airplane and it was taking off into the sky) and it was a very sweet movement to watch. Try talking verrry slowly. Watch everything in slow motion. She also told him/us that there are so many different people in the world. Ten people will taste coffee ten different ways. Ten people will enjoy payasam ten different ways. And so we cannot suit all of them. We cannot contort ourselves to try and please all of them. And that he was very handsome! There may be a little more, but I didn't take notes. Then Mother took another question. It seemed like she was motioning at one daughter, and Prajna was right by the mike to ask her question. She was also very sweet and crying. I was seated a few bodies away from her, and it was hard to decide whether to watch Amma listening or to her asking. "Mother, I have this dream that you and I are alone on a desert island, and it is just the two of us. But here, there are so many of us. How can we get to the place where we are alone with Amma when there are so many of us here in our physical bodies?" [or something like that] Swami also asked some questions for clarification -- about it being a dream -- and Amma replied something along the lines of that we are alone with Amma in our hearts, but she is always with us. And that we could pray not just for ourselves, but also that everyone be with Amma. It was a little confusing of an answer, so I wasn't hearing all of its subtleties, but it went on to culminate with the story Mother tells about the gopis feeling sad that Krishna had left them alone, and Radha explained to the gopis that they should not feel that way. That the Lord of their Heart is dancing the rasa lila with each of them, and that the pain of separation they feel, the artificialness of being apart or separate from him, was the longing that would motivate them towards (re) Union. Later, during Bhajans, Amma sang the new song, "Gange Ginta, pp. 11-12 of the 2006 supplement. Here is the English translation: Mother, you are holier than the river Ganges. You are more fair than pure milk. With what water could your feet be washed? Accept these tears with which I will wash your feet. Your eyes are brighter than the sun and Your nose ornament shines more resplendently than the stars. With what lamp could I perform arati to You? Accept my eyes that gaze intently on your form, with which I will perform arathi to You. Your hands are softer than a lotus. Your smile is more attractive than any type of flower. With what flower can I perform archana for You? Accept the work done by these hands as a substitute for the flowers offered to You in archana. Your form is more glorious than the mountains. Your lap is wider than the sea. In what form can I visualize you? O Mother, accept my heart that I surrender at Your feet."
