Visva-Bharati makes a mark on the field

Statesman News Service

SANTINIKETAN, Oct. 27: Visva-Bharati, famous for its quality of

education and cultural activities, has now started achieving laurels in the

field of sports as well, especially in the men's discipline.

The men's football team of the university performed well in the inter-

university football tournament for men (East Zone), this year. Visva-

Bharati became the East Zone champion and qualified for the All India

University football tournament, scheduled to be held from 29 October at

the Visva-Bharati premises. The East Zone tournament was organised

in Santiniketan between 19 to 23 October. A total of 28 universities from

some 11 states of the eastern zone of the country participated in the

tournament.

However, in the tournament, the universities of Calcutta, Burdwan and

the Vidyasagar university have also qualified for the All India

tournament, like it has been happening for the past few years. The

universities of Manipur, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh,

Tripura and Bihar, other than West- Bengal attracted the crowd with

their skill and strategy in the earlier part of the tournament. But by the

end of the East-zone tournament, West- Bengal dominated, as all the

universities that qualified from East Zone were from Bengal. In this

tournament Visva-Bharati apparently emerged as a force to reckon with

on the football ground, defeating Mithila, Culcutta, Vidyasagar. The

Burdwan University became the runner up in this tournament. Visva-

Bharati officials said that over the past few years they have been laying

stress on sports. Physical education department officials said that

since the physical education course was introduced in the university's

curriculum about six years ago, students of the university especially the

girls, have been producing good results at the national level.

Ms Sagarika Bandhapadhya, the head of the Physical Education

Department, Visva Bharati, told The Statesman: "We have taken

initiative to organise different university-level championships in

Santiniketan in order to encourage students to take up sports. If

tournaments like this can be organised regularly in the semi-urban

areas, the students of our department and the sports loving people of

these areas would be encouraged to join the field of sports."
