Dear Vaidyas,

I am after some advise on Ayurvedic, Chinese, Western herbs and Yogic

treatments for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Current medications include psychostimulants like Ritalin, Dexadrine,

Adderall etc all which have severe side effects such as decreased

appetite, hypertension, insomnia, nausea, irritability, rebound

agitation, mood swings, nightmares, fatigue and sedation to name but

a few.

ADHD kids may have hyperactive behaviour, a lack of attention and

difficulty concentrating. Most children with ADHD have signs of both

hyperactivity and attention problems. Some children, though, may have

only signs of inattention. I have only ever given Brahmi quite

successfully to a 5 year old child who previously only had signs of

inattention and his symptoms disappeared in 4 weeks with Brahmi.

This is slowly becoming an epidemic here in the west probably due to

lifestyle. However, I was after advice on which Ayurvedic and Yogic

treatments to advise. I am sure that a combination of certain asana

plus a herb(s) will be extremely beneficial, but I am not sure what

to advise the parents who have kids as young as 4 or 5 with ADHD.

Thank you in advance

Ray

I think that it is especially important to first work with the parent's health. While a child with ADHD can have many gifts, parenting such an energetic child can be draining physically and emotionally. Also, when parents adopt Ayurvedic lifestyle, especially related to daily and seasonal routines, these will positively influence the child's health.

Iam working with a teen with ADHD who as a child who would get into a headstand against the wall and read book! However, for some kids with ADHD, inverted poses would be much to stimulating for their vestibular systems.
