He is reluctant to wear his mala while working at his new job, where he has to handle and sometimes prepare meat. I know a strict Vaishnavite who works as a chef in a restaurant/bistro where he also has to handle meat. When at work, he puts his mala in a cotton pouch in his pocket and secure the pouch with safety pins so it will not fall out. During working hours, he does not touch the pouch or the beads while they are in the pocket. He feels lost if he doesn't have the beads on his person. Hence this method to have the beads with him while he works but without touching them while handling meat. He is vegetarian himself for many years, but due to circumstance he was forced to take this job momentarily, as this was the only option to support his family for the time being, while he is actuively searching for another job. Wishing your buddy the best of luck and quick success in securing an appropriate job where he will be happy in, which pays well and where he will not have to handle meat. The handling of meat is giving him a lot a pain, as he is a devout vaishnava. I told him he should wear the mala all the time, also at work, but he feels he should not wear the mala while handling the meat, as it is offensive. To Vaishnavites who are strict vegetarians brought up in strict households or traditions, yes its offensive to them. But to Smarta Hindus, certain Shavite traditions, Classical Tantric Lineages, Nathas and Aghoris, eating and handling meat is not a problem. > > His faith in Rudraksha is strong and so is his experience of the beads are really helping him in various ways, since the beginning he is daily chanting the associated bija mantras. This is good to hear. Those with strong faith in rudraksh and recite relevant mantras with devotion will find liberation. > > Is it wrong of me to recommend him to wear his mala while handling the meat, will he get more negative karma or will it be less due to wearing the beads? You did what you thought was right, hence there is no wrong as you are innocent about strict Vaishnavite practices and beliefs. When they are from that strict a background and been vegetarian all their lives especially, then its not wise to "convert" them. Each to their own. We must respect one anothers' backgrounds and practices. Negative karma is when you actually manage to convince them to go against what they do not believe in (subconsciously from the core of their being or jiva). > > I know there are different warnings about wearing certain > beads in conjunction with meats. The rule of thumb for people from different backgrounds applies to this (as mentioned above). Again, the Example: Smarta Hindu, Saivite, Vaishnavite, Shakta, Natha, Tantrika, etc. Mostly, its Vaishnavites from strict vegetarian backgrounds who do not use beads in conjunction with meats. Other than this, there is nothing in any holy text that contains warnings about using certain beads in conjunction with meats. Could someone elaborate on this, while giving specific advice in this particular case? Thank you for any help, Satyadharma Ommmmm
