I met the following passage. kaamazaastre ca sRGgaaro dazaavasthaH prakiirtitaH/VII 1411cd abhilaaSas tataz cintaanusmRtir guNakiirtanam/ udvego 'tha vilaapaH syaad unmaado vyaadhisaMbhavaH// uDataa maraNaM ceti dazaavasthaaH prakiirtitaaH/1413ab Kunjuni Raja's translation: The Kaama Saastra has mentioned ten conditions in love. Longing, then Anziety, Recollection, Enumeration of (the beloved one's) Merits, Distress, Lamentation, Insanity, Sickness, Stupor and Death - these are the ten stages of love. The commentator, Kallinaatha also says that Kaama Saastra means Vaatsyaayna and so on. But I confused because I can not find the above or similar description in Kaamasuutra. If someone know the sources of the ten stages of love, which can be described in the above or similar way, please let me know. And I believe that the source (or, at least, one of the sources) for this system is Bharata’s Natyashastra. In the Chapter XXII (Parimal Publications, 1994, 3rd volume), all these avastha-s are described in great details (starting from verse 170). In other publications, I think, it is the Chapter XXIV. I also think that ‘kAmasUtre’ in the text and ‘kAmaSAstre’ in the commentary do not mean any particular treatise, but the ‘science of love’ in general. Anyway, this system, with some different avastha-s, is also found in other texts on dance, f.e., in those ascribed to Nandikeshvara. Hope, this helps. Guest guest Posted October 20, 2006 Report Share Posted October 20, 2006 I believe that Sri Ujjavala Nilamani has a description of the different stages of bhava or prema, unconditional Divine Love. And also Gita Govinda may have some mention of it as well as there is a CD/ book version of Gita Govinda that has ragas of Indian music which are in essence an aural illustration, if you will, of these stages of transcendental yoga or Union with the Beloved.
