THE THUMB RULE FOR WEARING A GEM/expensive?

i have a small question which i am not able to comprehend.i need your help.if a person is required to wear for example a yellow Sapphire of 5Ct's.does he have to make it in a single gemstone or he can use 5 gems of 1ct .this way he can achieve the d 5Ct's in a limited budget.as buying a gem of 5Ct's is going to be very expensive.

Is this formula effective .
