There has been a number of messages regarding iodized salt in this

list.

Iodine helps the body synthesize the thyroid hormones, thyroxine and

triiodothyronine, which are needed for healthy growth and development.

If above hormones are inadequate, hypothyroidism sets in according to

modern science and obesity is the result. But this author always used

to wonder, despite iodized salt being eaten for last 20 years or so,

obesity epidemic has increased! Endocrine disorders as a result of

environmental toxicity can not explain global epidemic of obesity.

Some people in some regions of the world are deficient in iodine, and

they may need iodine suppliment. But recent developments in

China may give us jolt. There, iodine has been added to salt since

1996, and researchers are only now discovering that people are

suffering from autoimmune thyroiditis, hypothyroidism and sub-

clinical hypothyroidism.

[New England Journal of Medicine, 2006; 354: 2783-93]

Above research paper is available online at:

http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/abstract/354/26/2783

Authors finds that some patients, though they

come with normal thyroid hormone test resutlts (taken during previous

alloptahic consultations), their accu points corresponding to thyroid

gland are tender. 99 times out of 100, author tells them they are

eating iodised salt, as sensed by "ayurvedic pulse diagnosis".

surprise reaction comes from patients !

Any thoughts?
