Guest guest
Dear Esteemed Ayur doctors and Vaidyas, Let me explain that my mail is not targeted towards Drs Vidhyasagar, Phadke, Hingmire, Patil etc. I am only providing my 2 cents to Dr Hingmire's mail about his patient and my approach towards clients who seek help in restoring balance. Ayurveda is different from Western medicine because we look at the whole picture or status of the person. This includes just not the physical symptoms but also mental and emotional status. Recommendations include primarily dietary changes to be followed by herbs and other practices like Yoga, meditation, etc. However, in all the mails thus far when someone seeks advice about recommendations, I notice that everyone jumps into the fray and puts forth an entire plethora of medicines (churna, vatis, arishtas, asavas etc). Isn't this very similar to Western Medicine of attacking the symptoms without investigating the root cause of the problem? For eg: for this patient that Dr Hingmire described, instead of suggesting so many different herbal formuals, would it not be a proper approach to see the patient's Digestion, Apetite, Elimination, Status of agni, ama and Ojas and address these aspects before recommending Herbal formulas. If her agni and apetite is very low, if she has a lot of Ama, if her Ojas is low, she will not have the capacity of digesting all the herbal formulas in the first place. Would it not be proper therefore to increase her agni and Ojas first by recommending a proper diet therapy with suitable spices? Once her agni comes up fairly well, her ojas will also improve and she will be in a position to digest all the herbs. In fact if she responds well to a suitable diet program, 75% of her physical symptoms will disappear. Herbs will only provide a secondary effect. Would this not be a proper approach? In the past, few practitioners like Drs Bhate and Todd have stressed " a diet approach" and I hope we will agree that Dr Hingmire's patient is very weak and needs a good diet therapy before moving into herbs. I will appreciate your feedback and line of thought.
