Dear Lakshmi ji

>From what we have seen so far,and also looking at the root meanings

it is quite clear that Mada is intoxicating except for a compound

meaning as Chandrashekhar ji has mentioned.Take any dictionary -

intoxicating is the first and simple meaning.

Madaalasa,Maadaka,Madya,Madira,Madonmatha,Madabhara, etc are more

than enough to understand what is Mada.

Madabhara gandham,Madabhara Nimisham etc - what does it mean -

Gandha filled with Mada will make one attracted/ attached(think of

those branded perfumes, ladies are using:)).

Similarly nimisha filled with Mada.We all know rahu gives

attachment.I don't think thus it is very difficult.

Now as one may still debate ,i would like to give you another clear

evidence.

Bharatamuni ,Natyashastra kara has mentioned 33,Vyabhicharibhavas,

(transient or fleeting moods) as compared to sthayi Bhavas.

Out of these(full list given below) two are Mada(intoxication),Garva

(Arrogance or pride). If Mada is pride why should Mahamuni give

Arrogance as seperate?.

Root meaning in madya ''madira''( wine/liquor) is intoxicating

agent.Even the english word mad can be though like that -madness is

identical to highly intoxicated state. Also Unmaada!!

I feel it is very clear and hope Visti ji makes a note of this

point. It is not Kalyan Varmas view ...it was just a translators

view!!!!

As promised iwill attend to Aham later.

These trasitory states are: Nirveda (detachment), Glani

(weakness),Shanka (Apprehension), Asuya (envy), Mada (intoxication),

Shrama (fatigue), Alasya (indolence), Dainya (depression), Chinta

(anxiety),Moha (delusion), Smriti (recollection), Dhriti

(contentment), Vrida (shame), Chapalata (agility), Harsha (joy),

Avega (agitation), Jadata

(stupor), Garva (arrogance), Vishada (despair), Autsukya

(longing/yearning), Nidra (sleep/slumber), Apasmara (epilepsy),

Supta (dream), Vibodh (awakening), Amarsha (indignation), Avahittha

(dissimulation), Ugrata (violence), Mati (intellect), Vyadhi

(disease),Unmada (insanity), Marana (death), Trasa (terror) and

Thanks

Pradeep
