offering in odd numbers and even numbers

Dear friends,

In North India the tradition is that at an auspicious occasion or

ceremony the offering is made in odd numbers, where as at an

inauspicious occasion it is always in even numbers.

For example an offering made at a temple, or a dakshina given to a

purohit at the time of marriage etc is always in odd numbers like Rs

101 , Rs 501 etc.

But at the time of cremation or pind daan or similar inauspicious

occasions the offer is always in even numbers like Rs 100 or Rs 500

etc.

The logic behind these two forms of offering is that when we give

in even number it is supposed to be a final act… that's final.. we

no more want it again, we do not want to continue it any further…

it ends here and now. We do not want such occasions to come any

more. It has a sense of finality. Zero at the end signifies ... the

end.

Where as offering made in odd number signals continuity, we want

such occasions to come more often, the act of giving is not final

yet .. it continues.

Hence the two different forms of offerings.

With naman to all gurujan,
