Shradh is remembering of ancestors. There is a wrong impression that

it is performed only on the death anniversary. It is not true. On all

auspicious functions like Marriage etc. we do perform the function of

remembering our ancestors.

Feeding the Brahmins is not the only way. You can arrange for poor

feeding on that day. Many of us arrange for feeding of the sick

patients in a Charitable hospital. This way you give succor to the poor

and sick people. There are some charitable hospitals in Chennai who do

this.

Another ideal place in an orphanage. Feeding the orphan children is an

excellent way to remember your ancestors. Buy a bag of rice and give

to the orphanage or distribute sweets to the children there.

The idea is to remember the ancestors. How you do it depends on you.

There is another observation about Shradh. Many persons who have

neglected their parents during their lifetime are very enthusiastic

about performing the shradh.

I always make a remark that the ghosts of the parents are more

powerful than the living ones. I do not think a son who has starved

his parents during their lifetime will get any benefit by performing

the shradh after their death.

Take care of your parents during their lifetime. You will have their

blessings even after their death.

As Sankarruku and shanracer wrote, it is mainly to remember and

pay our gratitude to our parents.

Anna-daan (offerings of food) is one of the greatests danas.

Before Shraadh, the priest asks you to do "Sankalp" which means, you

are not offering this food for your own benefit but for the parents.

Food does not reach the dead, but the good karma and good energies

created by you for them reaches them and soothes them. They, in

turn send their blessings to the sons.

Brahmins remained the most poor and deprived class for ages

despite their knowledge. Some (like Chankya)..refused luxuries

offered by kings...so from ancient times Brhamins were chosen for

offering as they really needed food.

However, there is no harm in offering food to orphanage or other

poor people, as sankarruku advised.

> If the soul has taken re-birth, how the food will reach him??

As I told food does not reach them, but the Positive energy and

good karma created by you on their behalf reach them...hence this

question nullifies

Hope it helps

with love

shattered and i am back..hope to write more frequently. I must

convey my thanks to you and all other sadhakas for keeping the

Sadhna flame burning
