Guest guest
Respected Shri. Richardji, Thank you very much for your mail. We all know that 'Whelk' is a totally different gastropod species, Busycon contrarium than that of a sacred conch species Turbinella pyrum (Sinistral and Dextral). Whelk species is popularly known as 'Lightning Whelk' and is commonly found in Florida, USA. 1) Busycon contrarium : Family : Melonginidae Synonyms : Busycon perversum and Busycon sinistrum. 2) Turbinella pyrum : Family : Turbinellidae Busycon contrarium is no way related to Turbinella pyrum either genetically or morphologically. Families of both the species are different. It is therefore funny and misguiding to call it as a 'Genetic Cousin' of a true 'Lakshmi Shankh', Turbinella pyrum (Sinistral). One can call other species and varities under the genus Turbinella as genetic cousins of each other, but certainly not Busycon contrarium. In case of 'Lightning Whelk', Busycon contrarium, sinistrality is a rule and dextrality is an abnormal character, rarely seen. However, in case of Turbinella pyrum, dextrality is a rule and sinistrality is very rarely seen. Busycon carica and Busycon spiratum are the two species which exclusively show dextral characters and not sinistral. I have in my personal collection a dextral specimen of Busycon carica and will post the picture of it on the clubsite very soon. It is scientifically proved that sinistrality and dextrality are genetic characters, however, this does not mean that all sinistral species are genetic cousins of each other. There are many gastropod genera and species showing sinistral characters which are morphologically different from each other. The retail cost of 'Lightning Whelk' in the Indian market is approx. Rs. 100/- per inch length. It is never sold on weight basis. Thanking you and with personal regards, Chandrashekhar Phadke Richard Shaw Brown <rsbj66 > wrote: Dear Chandrashekar, Namaste!!!
