Dear Pt Tata,

Namaste!!! I was looking at both your "astha Lakshmi" shanks, and they

both had a long scar running the length, also the ridges look very

pronounced. Are you sure about these?

The pic on your sample certificate looks real, but the astha Lakshmis

are strange.

Dear Vijay Kumar,

There is a famous saying "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread" – you

have just proved it with your rash, thoughtless and insinuating comments

about my products- without even seeing the real products. Experienced

Valampuri suppliers like John Ravi and Chandrasekhar Phadke even take x-rays

before declaring a Valampuri a fake or real.

In March 2006 after seeing these Shankha pictures on my site you emailed me

and wanted to buy 3 of these Valampuries. As I get a lot of fake enquires, I

asked you to give your phone and address and then you simply vanished. Today

you claim the same Shankhas are fakes! I have all your emails and can put

them here if necessary. You claim you are a conchologist but you don't even

know the spelling of conchologist and spell it as "CONCHOLOGISH'. Your level

of education is equally obvious from the horrendous English you write – full

of terrible spelling & grammar mistakes.

For your information the Valampuri Shankhas displayed on my site will be

sold with an x-ray proof, a guarantee certificate by me and an

authentication certificate by Mr. Chandrasekhar Phadke – one of the best

known conchologists of India, who is a PHD in Marine Biology.

Another Valampuri dealer tried to acquire these rare Valampuri Shankhas and

failed. In fact the terrible English language/style you write is exactly

that of this supplier with a demonic name! I will not be surprised if you

are an associate or a duplicate ID of one of them. The web forums are full

of fake duplicate IDs – some to praise their own products and the others to

slander their competitors!

The utter nonsense you have posted in a public forum, without an iota of

proof, is insulting and damaging - both to me personally, to my website and

to my business. Unless you tender an apology within 48 hours of this letter

being posted in the forum, I reserve the right to sue you for damages.

Tracking you is not a problem as each and every email carries its IP address

and computer location origin. I can sue you any where in the world through

my clients and business associates.

Dear Richardji & all,

As the rash, thoughtless and insinuating comments by Vijay Kumar about my

polished Valampuries - without even seeing the real products, has raised a

storm in a tea cup about the authenticity and pricing of these coveted

Lakshmi Shankhas, I thought I should write a few details.

1. Real & Fake: Only an expert can tell this. Even experts get fooled once

in a while. So highly qualified people like Chandrasekhar Phadke have

resorted to proper scientific testing with x-rays. I learned it from him and

using x-rays as a basic test before buying. An additional testing I have

started is to test the Shankha material itself by laboratory chemical

testing. This tells whether it is conch material or some kind of ceramic

fake. A highly reliable age old test is to hold the Shankha against light –

if it is a real Shankha, the light glows through. Add to this a visual

examination for tampering marks etc is a must.

2. Varieties of Shankhas: These Shankhas, whether Vamavarti or

Dakshinavarti, come in many sizes and shapes with several different

characteristics. The following link, given by Mr. Phadke, shows the pictures

of several species of Shankhas.

http://www.gastropods.com/Taxon_pages/TN_Family_TURBINELLIDAE_TURBINELLINAE..html

It is possible to find as many types of Dakshinavarti Shankhas as the

regular Vamavarti varieties, because it is a freak of nature which makes it

open the other way. As you can see on the link page, there are long ones,

short ones, fat ones, ones with pronounced ridges, holes at the bottom,

scars running along etc. Just because some people have not seen certain

varieties dose not make them fakes.

For example some may question the authenticity of the Polished Shankhas on

my web page because the shape and characteristics are a bit unusual. On this

page just bellow my Valampuri pictures, I have given a link to show how

close they are to the Shankhas found in the Mohenjo-daro & Harappa

excavations.

See my Shankha pictures here >

http://www.astrojyoti.com/dakshinavartipolished.htm

See the excavation pictures here >

http://www.astrojyoti.com/shankhaworshipinharappa.htm

Maximum Valampuri Shankhas are found in the Rameshwaram-Sri Lanka coast

which is the real citadel of the Valampuri. They are the typical "with skin"

variety we know – the "Jati" Type and the "Gauri" type. The Valampuries

found in the Bengal coast, Dwaraka coast, and the Konkan coast etc., differ

in size shape and characteristics. Just because one has never seen a Dwaraka

variety Valampuri doesn't give one the right to call the most coveted

Dwaraka Valampuri a fake. Let put it another way. The people who are

questioning my beautiful polished Valampuries are like the ones who have not

seen a Zebra and claiming that it is a donkey painted with black stripes!!

3. Polished & unpolished: As the Rameshwaram-Sri Lanka belt has maximum

Valampuries; it is the most heavily poached area. Hence a lot of them are

caught when they are young and hence small in size. As the crust is thin,

not many dare to get them buff polished for the fear of damaging. Hence the

majority of the Valampuries we get are the with skin types. It is the bigger

ones, with thicker crust, which are polished and look very attractive. If a

modern lady goes to a beauty parlor and gets her facial hair removed and

eyebrows trimmed, please don't call her a eunuch!!

4. Pricing: These Shankhas are found by the fishermen who dive into the sea

to get them. They sell them to the Shankha wholesalers and dealers. Then

they change hands. If you are lucky to get hold of a fisherman who has a

Lakshmi Shankha, you'll get a cheap price. But now even the fishermen know

at what price the Valampuries are selling. The quotations I am getting

currently are:

a)Small with skin Valampuries bellow 100gms – Rs. 8000 to 10000 per gram.

The smaller ones cost more per gram.

b)Medium with skin – above 150 grams – Rs. 4000 to 5000 per gram.

c)Larger with skin – 200 to 400 grams – Rs. 2500 to 3000 per gram.

d)Polished ones – 150 grams and above - Rs. 1500 to 2000 per gram.

e)Polished Jewel Quality – 150 grams and above – Rs. 2000 to 2500 per gram.

The testing costs me Rs.2000 per Shankha plus I have to spend an average of

four hours per Shankha testing. Plus I issue a guarantee certificate - plus

another authentication certificate by the best known Indian conchologist Dr..

Chandrasekhar Phadke – a PhD in Marine Biology.

So I add a bit more for all this trouble.

With regards

Pandit S.P.Tata

Dear Ravan,

Noted that you write pucca angreji and all the desi mistakes are by your

assistants. But a small doubt about your British English. You wrote, "If you

think you are good in English…". I thought the British write GOOD AT and not

GOOD IN. Correct me if I am wrong.

As per being your being nice etc. – In the near past, you sent me several

Shankha pictures and told me PHD thesis type of stuff about Valampuri in

technical terms. After agreeing about the prices, when I had ready

customers, I offered to buy several pieces from you, willing to pay nearly

Rs.2 million cash down. You never had a Single one with you and you could

not buy from Mr. Phadke and you told me a series of stories and could not

supply a single Valampuri. You offered them to me, I came to you to buy and

you muffed it. So if I tie up with Mr.Chandrasekhar Phadke, I don't think I

am being untrustworthy as you put it.

Regards

Pandit S.P.Tata
