Dear Shri.Goel,

Thank you very much for your scholarly reference on positional Astronomy centre, Calcutta. We in Tamil Nadu predominantly either follow pAmbu Vakkiya panchangam patronized by Thanjavour Royal Palace or Vasan Drik ganidha panchangam.The former is in circulation for more than 150 years and most Saivite temples in Tamil Nadu follow their festivels in accordance with pAmbu Vakkiya panchangam.

Guru / Sukra asthamanam dates as given by me do fall in line with the dates as is given in the above referred Panchangams but these dates as such do not synchronize with the dates given you.I presume you have identified the Guru/Sukra asthamanam dates by using JHora software, if so please advise me to find my way to locate such future dates from JHora.

Further you have advocated that the Dosa starts three days before and continues three days after the setting period. Kindly advise me for my academic interests that which classic enunciates the rule.

Some Panchang Makers are calculating various values based on old shidhants..

The experience teaches us that these values do not provide correct information

and this does not correspond to observed values.

All most 90% Panchang makers obtain the basic data from Positional astronomical centres. THE calculations based on such data yield much accurate results.

1. According to Lahiris's Ephemeris Helical Settings of:

a).Venus-4 Oct,2006 20.10.hrs. to 25Nov,2006 at 24,42 hrs.

b). Jupiter- 8Nov , 28.32 hrs to 2Dec,2006 at 25.01 hrs

d). The dates and timings also slightly changes with THE LATITUDE AND ALTITUDE OF THE PLACE .

e). Dosa starts three days before and continues three days after the setting period.

I agree with both of you (but I am practically unaware of the practices obtaining at Uttar Bharat) and in addition to it there are grace periods, prefix and suffix to period of asthamana, they are as follows:-

(1) Guru Asthamana dosha commences 15 days in advance of its date of commencement of asthamana and ends 8days after its udahya.

(2)Sukra asthamana dosha commences 10 days in advance of its date of commencement of Asthamana dosha and ends 10days after its udhaya.

Shri.KRji, I further of the opinion that all the known Astrological software could only be used predominantly for delineating human horoscopes but for selecting and determining good mukurthas we have to fall back on reliable market panchang of ones faith.

I believe JHora gives accurate graga paada chaara on the Drik ganitha formula than any other printed Panchanga available in Market; but how do we go about to understand Guru – Sukra asthamana periods from JHora software [panchanga] to fix any subha / auspicious mukurtha.
