Spreading his knowledge of fine arts, a professor from Ara in Bihar

is silently working on a craft which is not very common in Northern

India. A visitor to the city for the past eight years, Prof

Jaiprakash is a well-known face among the devotees thronging the Sri

Chaitanya Gaudiaya Math, Sector-20, every year on the auspicious

occasion of Janamashtami.

A master sculptor, he has been making the religious sculptures which

are showcased every year in the math premises during the festival.

Guided by the likes of N K Mishra, a Shanti Niketan product, Prof

Jaiprakash started early in his pursuit for excellence in fine

arts. ''I was very good in drawing so my teachers in school firmly

told me that I should pursue the field of art.'' And that is how his

journey in the art world began.

Apart from guiding his students in college he has been working on

various projects involving sculpting and also guiding his students

in college. He has also made murals for characters in Ramayana and

has been awarded a national award by the Lalit Kala Akademi in the

year 2001 for excellence in arts.

Talking about his first visit to the city, he fondly shares that

while on a visit to Bihar, some members of the Chandigarh chapter of

Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math saw his works and invited him to come to

the city and he accepted the invitation.

Impressed by the discipline and cleanliness of the city, he says

that he looks upon this time of the year to visit Chandigarh. Over 3

lakh people visit the Chaitanya Gaudiya Math every year during

Janamashtami and the display of the religious sculptures is one of

the main attractions of the celebrations here.

In city for the last one-and-a-half months with four of his students

from Bihar, Prof Jaiprakash likes to visit Rock Garden and wishes to

make sculptures from waste materials following its example.''I would

like to work upon waste materials and use them in sculpting,'' he

says.
