Hi Charles,

i can only speculate why you might be on a low fat diet - i know its

the conventional, recommended approach, but in my opinion its unwise

and only promotes fat soluble nutrient deficiencies and a host of

other problems

for example, milk contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, as

well as potential anticarcinogens such as CLA, sphingomyelin and

butyric acid

when consumed as the raw, whole milk, the fats in milk have an

immunoprotective activity, such as the cholesterol which prevents gut

damage

raw whole milk also contains all of the enzymes needed for its digestion

in ayurveda, raw milk can be cooked to preserve it a little longer,

but usually with herbs to replace the enzymatic activity lost by

heating (dipanapachana)

low fat milk is a watery, protein (casein-rich) colloid that is

devoid of these immunoprotective fats, and in my opinion, simply

enhances its immunogenicity - in your case, simply enhancing the

immunological cross tolerance issue

whole milk of course contains the fat that is used to make butter and

ghee, and by all accounts ghee/butter are ayurvedic health foods, in

moderation

in an otherwise vegetarian diet, full fat dairy products are

essential to maintain health

but for you, i would avoid the milk and switch to ghee instead, which

doesn't contain casein protein (which is immunogenic) or sugars (to

promote dysbiosis)

best wishes... todd

Raw milk is best, in agreement with Todd. You will get B12 vitamin,

only source for vegetarians. Cow fats, if properly digested,

have "Medha" quality, meaning building up of cognitive intelligence,

and most ayurvedic medicines for Nervous sytem are made in cow ghee

for this purpose. In ayurveda, if you wish to balance working of

endocrine system, you can not avoid cow, either her butter, ghee or

else her urine gives hormone balancing medicines. Needless to say,

this cow is Indian cow, without oxytocin injections, anti-biotics and

free range, grass fed, well cared by owner/attendant. We are

fortunate to get her milk, ghee and urine for medicines even today.

Ghee will be better as Todd says, but still if you wish to consume

milk, Mix 1 cup milk with 1 cup water, add 1/2 tsp ginger powder, 1/4

tsp turmeric powder, boil till 1 cup remains and take warm at bedtime

and breakfast time. This also takes care of digestion of undesirable

proteins in milk. Ayurveda offers many more herbs to be boiled with

milk to obtain many different remedies, the list is huge..

Namaste

I was diagnosed with MS in 1/2004. Fortunately, I have very mild

symptoms, mostly numbness is my fingers and feet along with some

lightheadedness. After I got over the trauma of having "MS", I

started to investigate my different approaches to health. I have

since stopped taking the injections of interferon and rigorously

follow a number of health and sadhana practices.

I believe diet is crucial in controlling MS and follow the Swank low

fat diet. However, I do use ghee on occasion, but also use non

refined olive oils as well.

I also supplement heavily with vitamins including high doses of the

B family. This regimen is from Dr. Perlmutter Better Brian book and

it is a supplement approach for MS patients. He is a board certified

neurologist, but focuses heavily on lifestyle changes and minimize

the use of liver damaging drugs, such as interferon.

I am a firm believer that my MS is a direct result of my extreme

pitta lifestyle, since I have made many changes in my life, my

symptoms are at times non existent and when they do occur, I can

correlate to moving out of balance.

With all that said, it sounds like if I do use dairy, I should use

organic whole milk. Unfortunately, raw is hard to find in my area.

Currently, I cut dairy out except 8 oz in the morning with my

oatmeal. I am planning on trying soymilk instead. I am also doing

the ¼ ts of turmeric as suggested, but I mix in OJ instead of milk.

I am going to try this for a few weeks and see if the allergies are

better.

I miss my mango lassis <sniff, sniff>, but have switch to dates as

my sweet treats.

Om Shanti,

Very interesting site, indeed. It is very similar to the Swank diet

and other approaches which I am currently practicing. Thank you for

pointing it out.

I am in amazed and currently disillusioned with western medicine since

my experiences with MS. None of my doctors suggested anything but

injections for the rest of my life. At one point, I had a conflicting

set of lab results and my local neurologist sent me to the University

of Pennsylvania.

I was excited as they have 120 neurologists on staff and represent

a "brain trust". I thought for sure I was going to get some very

interesting advice, a mix of western and some new thoughts on diet,

etc… Instead, the topic of diet never came up. I questioned my

specialist and she told me that MS was already a devastating disease

that they do not mention diet to their patients, in a condescending

manner she said,

"It is already hard enough for a MS patient to cope, let alone tell

them to have a very restrictive diet. But if you believe diet and

supplements are helping you, then by all means do it. However, the

scientific community does not support this approach. Just continue to

take your injections. In fact, the future for MS treatment is new

drugs. The pharmaceutical companies are making remarkable progress."

I was blown away. I could not believe what I was hearing. I came back

home and the next visit told my local neurologist I stopped the

injections and was going to try my approach; diet, supplements,

Ayurveda, etc.. I told her I would like to monitor my condition every

couple of years or sooner, if needed, with MRI to see if the lesions

were increasing, remaining steady or decreasing. Fortunately, she was

agreeable.

Personally, I am holding things steady and feel great about my long-

term prospects. And in many ways, MS has all been a remarkable

blessing as it has had me re-focus on my spiritual path as the real

disease, the worst disease of all, is spiritual bankruptcy.

Now if I could only get the sinuses under control, I could make real

strides in my pranayama practice!

Om Shanti,

C

Do you have to boil milk to prevent deadly bacteria like TB or

Brucellis?

Are other grains besides wheat ok,or bad?

Is coconut juice ok to take?

I have sinus problems too.
