Dear Dr. Murali

Shiivlinga is worshipped in this form because of its prehistoric origin. It

was not known then by the name it is known today. It relates to Indian

concept of genesis. The concept of Indian genesis grew later and manifested

itself in various physical forms; one of these is Shivalinga. Some of the

other forms are manistambha, post in the middle of a pond etc.

The concept of linga goes back to Indus. In the earlier days it was

certainly a representation of the human phallus and later on evolved

into a symbolism. Early lingas (like the one in Gudimallam AP) were

actually sculpted to resemble phallus in its exact proportions and shape.

Rudra or raudra brahman is a different vedic concept that intermingled

with this linga worship (sisinadeva as it is referred to) to evolve

the origins of present day shiva symbolism
