Guest guest
Dear Members, In Ashtanga Samgraha in the Dinacaryaa Adhyaaya sloka 19 it says that there are several contraindications for cleaning the teeth: They are: - ajiirna indigestion - cardi vomitings - swaasa dyspnoea - kaasa cough - jwara fever - trsna thirst - etc... To me it seems like a rather good thing to clean the teeth if you have indigestion or do vomit and for the other reason I can't really see a reason why they would be contraindicated. Could someone please help me understand this, to me, rather puzzling part off an at large fantastic book. Thanks for your help, Kristian Frisk
Guest guest
1) All processes mentioned in 'daily regime' are exhaustive to the body and involve loss of bala. Basically all processes from morning ablutions to cleaning of teeth, mouth, eyes etc, exercise, bath etc. are meant to remove the excessive kapha accumulated in the body due to the long spell of rest during the night. 2) Not only for cleaning of teeth, contraindications are mentioned also for exercise and taking a bath. 3) The said sholka translates as - do not clean teeth (in this manner) if you have indigestion, nauseating feeling (chardi), .......... 4) The operative part is - in this manner - which means in the manner mentioned in the shlokas preceding it. This involves using the branch of certain plants as brush and metal strips as toungue cleaner. However you can rinse your mouth or use powders to clean the teeth. This is because the normal procedure is very exhaustive. This is similar to having a sponge bath when you are very sick and are not able to take a regular bath. 5) Also in case of indigestion or nauseating feeling vigorous rubbing involved in the method as mentioned in the texts may induce vommiting. Hence you should use a less vigorous method if you have any of the conditions mentioned in the sholka. Vd. S. M. Shirodkar.
