Dear Gandhi!

What your friend is saying is correct.Ayurveda consider all types of tremors as "Kampavata" which is one of the cordinal manifestations of vata prakopa. It is one of the signs among the Vataja nanatmaja vyadis.(80 types of vata diseases--asheeti vata rogas)In this, mere vata alone increase.Considering your case ,tremors are due to tension, this can be explained in ayurveda as

"Shokaat vatam krodhaat pittam" means grief increase vaata, anger increase pitta. It too further explained that certain psychological conditions like chinta ( Excessive thinking),Bhaya (fear, anxiety, neurosis, stress) also key reasons to increase vaata.

Hense i would suggest you medicines those posseses qualities like vata hara, snigdha, madhura, balya, brimhana, sheetaveerya, and importantly Medhya.

Ghee preparations like Brahmi ghritam,Ashwagandha ghritam, etc will be help ful..

I prefer these are to be used in the mode of "Snehapana".

Single drugs like brahmi, yastimadhu, kushmanda, shankhapushpi, jatamamsi,Manduka parni, too helpful.....

I was diagnosed with Essential Tremors several years back. My hands,

legs, body tremble when I am tense and Inderol helps to some extent.

Parkinson's disease was ruled out. Recently, a friend of mine

mentioned that what I have is called kampa vatha and that ayurveda

treats all tremors (both parkinsons & others) the same way. Is this

true? Is there any cure for essential tremors in Ayurveda?

Thanks

Gandhi

Dr Venugopal has already answered your question well.

Exact correspondence between thousands of disease names defined by

modern science and those of ayurveda is often difficult.

Tremors are often due to conditions tabulated by mainstream science under name

Multiple sclerosis. Instead of those of extremeties, tremors in

waist, balance of the upper torso are also seen. Ayurveda urges

Vaidyas to diagnose dosha state rather than name of the disease. And

treat according to Dosha state.

Medhya herbs mentioned by Dr Venugopal are good choices, author would

like to add even Kapikachu (Mucuna Pruirients), Acorus Calamus, even though former is

known as a Parkinson herb. In ayurveda, herbs when mixed properly,

act in synergy. Herbal mixtures through honey or cow-ghee as anupana

will be more effective. The experienced Vaidya will determine the

appropriate combination suitable for an individual through pulse of the patient. In addition to herbs a number of Bhasmas are also useful. e.g. Suvarna bhasma boosts the cost of a popular formulation termed 'Brihat Vat Chintamani Ras' for such diseases, but also is seen to give rapid result! Ayurveda provides a cure to suit every pocket.

Due to diversity of approaches, herbal choices, it is better to carry

out the treatment under neighbourhood Vaidya. While one vaidya may like to give snehapana, another may add panchkarama too. And treatment period can range from a half a year to two also. If you wish to follow ayurveda you should have that kind of patience.
