Guest guest
In the past, I used wrist malas, 108 malas, breath, steps while walking, fingers. Recently, bought a mechanical tally counter; thought it would be good to see how many I can do if I challenge myself on some days. Karuna Poole described shakti experiences on days she was able to do about 6,000(?) or so per day. One classic Christian book(? Pilgrim's Way?) recommends 12,000 repetitions/day of the Jesus Heart Prayer which eventually takes ones awareness from the head into the heart. Anyway, the mechanical tally counter from Staples malfunctions as follows; on reaching 099,199,299, - 899 it may turn over the thousand # along with the hundred # when it should not. We exchanged it and the same problem still. Some alternatives to the mechanical counters are: 1) electronic counter – found some on internet for $15 or less. Should be more reliable, smaller and easier to use; one was 2"X1.5"X3/8" 2) for emergency or limited use, can use an inexpensive( we got one for $1.29 at a dollar store) simple, small, electronic calculator as follows: initially press "1" and then "+" only once; then continue to press "=" and you have a tally counter; restrictions include: 1) may turn off automatically if not used for a few minutes 2) careful not to press other keys 3) cannot put in pocket 4) should have battery not solar. Good for continuous use without interrupts. I encourage anyone interested in challenging themselves, say for ONE DAY, and see if you can do 10,000 or whatever. Guest guest
Thanks for the update. Perhaps the name brand would be better? The Tally II comes in a desk stand model. Funny how the box on the staples model guaranteed accuracy though. I'll have to check mine for the problem and I'll report back. High japa number chantings is good, but I think the goal should be Amma's goal of constant japa with attention. I've seen plenty of Tibetan buddhists (at least American ones) that do japa constantly very mechanically (no pun intended), which only creates Karmic punya rather than mental purity or devotion. tom Ammachi, "amarnath" <anatol_zinc wrote: > > In the past, I used wrist malas, 108 malas, breath, steps while > walking, fingers. > > Recently, bought a mechanical tally counter; thought it would be > good to see how many I can do if I challenge myself on some days. > Karuna Poole described shakti experiences on days she was able to do > about 6,000(?) or so per day.
