Guest guest
Namah Shivayah, I am in the middle of reading Part 1 of Eternal Wisdom and recently transcribed some quotes of Amma that I either related to or found interesting. I thought others on the list might enjoy reading these. As far as I know, these are not online anywhere. Jai Jai Ma! ~Ananthasree "Do you know what kind of detachment is needed to attain God-realization? Imagine that you are sleeping soundly at home. Suddenly you wake up feeling very hot. You find that there is a fire raging all around you. Wouldn't you get into a frenzy at that moment, trying to escape from the fire? Think of the urgency with which you would cry for help, seeing death in front of you. You have to cry with that same urgency to get the vision of God. Think of how someone who falls into deep water and cannot swim, would struggle for breath. That's how much you have to struggle to merge in the Supreme Absolute. You should constantly feel the grief of not having attained the vision of God. At every moment, your heart should ache for it." "You need to feel, 'I don't want anything but God.' To someone who has a fever, even sweet things will taste bitter. Similarly, if you have the fever of love for God, your mind will not go towards anything else. Your eyes will not want to see anything but the form of God. Your ears will long to hear the divine name; all other sounds will irritate and burn your ears. Your mind will be struggling like a fish out of water until you reach God!" "What do we normally do when we eat something sweet, enjoy the sweet taste or remember God? If you can think of nothing but God even at that time, then there is no problem; you can follow the path." "It is not wise to go near a rabid dog declaring everything is Brahman. The friend who asks you to stay away from the dog is also Brahman. If you don't have the discrimination to decide on the right course of action in this case, your life will be ruined.." "Don't regret that you couldn't be a bramachari, or that you can't be with Amma all the time. You children are all like the leaves on a plant. Some leaves are close to the flower, and others are far away from it, but all the leaves belong to the same plant. Likewise, all are Amma's children; don't doubt that one bit. Don't feel sorry that you can't enjoy Amma's physical presence by not being with Her. You can also reach the ultimate goal." "In the early days, Amma used to hold the pillow close to Her heart when She went to bed. She would kiss the pillow repeatedly. She could not see it as a pillow; She felt it was Devi. Sometimes She would lie there with Her lips to the wall, imagining She was kissing the Divine Mother. Or She would write 'Namah Shivayah' on the pillow and the mat and then kiss the name. She wouldn't fall asleep before nearly falling unconscious, calling Devi again and again, crying for Her." "Once the love for God begins to blossom in your heart, then no other thought will enter. The blessed soul that has developed love for God is constantly intoxicated by it. The lover pines every second to be united with his beloved. He does not worry at all whether his beloved loves him or not in return. Every moment he is thinking of his dear beloved, brooding over the separation." "Once Amma started searching for God, She was writhing in agony until She reached the goal. The tears never stopped. There was no sleep. When the sun set, Her heart was violently agitated. Wasn't another day lost? Hadn't She wasted another day without knowing the Lord? The sorrow was too much to bear. She would stay awake all night, thinking that if she did not sleep, the day would not be lost. Always, there was this question: 'Where are you? Where are you?' Unable to bear the pain of not seeing the Lord, She would bite and tear at her own body. Sometimes, she would roll around on the floor, crying aloud, calling the Lord's names. She would spontaneously burst into tears. Amma went through each day in this manner. When you experience detachment, you may dislike this world. But you have to get beyond that stage as well. You have to see that everything is God." "Children, your heart should constantly throb and ache for God. Only those who have done this have attained salvation." "Only those who are willing to stay on, in spite of even being beaten and killed, will progress. A bramachari has to carry the whole world on his shoulders, so he should not be weakened by little things. I will really shake my children up. Those who desire only Self- realization will stay, the others will leave." http://www.ananthasree.com
