Guest guest
Om Namah Sivaya! Two summers ago, I was privileged to supervise small children as my seva during the retreat in San Ramon. I have to say that originally, I was not thrilled about this because my seva was during the Atma Puja and I wanted to be in the main hall with Amma for that. Well, to my surprise, it was "scheduled" for the kids to perform this puja too... kiddie style. Each child got a white paper plate on which 2 paper feet were already placed on. (Each foot represented Amma's foot.) Then each child took stickers (flowers, butterflies, lamps, petals, etc.) and placed them on/around "Amma's feet." While doing so, they all knew what each item meant and offered them in the proper order. One of the kids who was not even 5 years old placed a snake next to Amma's feet. That puzzled me, so I asked this girl, "Why does Amma need a snake?" (Why would one offer a snake to Amma when one can give her roses, carnations, etc.?) This girl looked at me, smiled and explained that the snake represented kundalini energy. I was stunned that this pre-schooler was so advanced and knew what kundalini was. (I didn't know what kundalini was until I was past 30.) To make things much better, during the puja, each child got up and said why they loved Amma. Their answers were awesome. Here are some: "because Amma gives me chocolate; because Amma gives me hugs; because Amma always gives us what we all want..." These kids were so loving, positive and uplifting! After the puja, the kids played. Many acted out roles from the scriptures and sang bhajans; many kids knew lots of mantras. These are small children and they KNEW a lot!!! The point of my story is: kids on tour/at satsangs may be loud at times, but they're absorbing so much! They're spiritually evolving quickly! We need to support them until they understand the importance of silence/retreat. We are all their teachers and just like Amma has patience and love for all of us, we need to have patience, love and understanding for all of them.
