I hesitate to say this... or ask it... "Only in California?"

But seriously folks, anybody know anything about this event? Planning on

attending?

Manoj, Chitanand, et al., I would like to know what Amma would say about Her

children being part of this ceremony.

I heard about his a few weeks ago. I have two feelings about it, one being that the time and location of the KM is kind of a big deal, it takes place at the convergence of three holy rivers, one of which is a river of sacred energy, not water, and it takes place during a specific astrological alignment. So, it's a nice idea to gather a bunch of American spiritual people together, but it's kind of silly to call it a Kumbha Mela, IMO.

The other thought I have is that Swami Sarvadevananda of the Vedanta Society in Hollywood (my old temple) will be there, and I would go just to take his padadhooli again. He's great.

I've never been too much into these spiritual expo-type events, they tend to bring out a lot of ego in people. But you never know, it could be really sweet and wonderful, too. I think it really depends on the intention of the people gathered.

Prajna

I agree that it is silly to call it a kumbh mela. It most certainly is not, unless they are taking that verbiage is a purely allegorical sense.

Prajnaji, you are a bit incorrect though. The mela you speak of is the Allahabad one. There are four different spots where the Kumbh Mela takes place, to correspond with the four places that a drop of Amrit fell from the "kumbh" that was holding it as the asuras chased the devas through the sky to get at it. The confluence of the rivers does not happen at the other locations--which are Hardwar, Nasik and Ujjain.

I agree with your analysis. Let us hope it is the type of event that will raise consciousness.

How could anyone say what Amma would say? How could we be so presumptuous? It would only be mere speculation based upon our very, very, very limited understanding of Her.

Wow, I never realized that about the four locations. Do they happen at the same time, or does the KM rotate to a different place each time?

I appreciate the comments & insights, Prajna and Surya.

I've always wanted to go to one of the Kumbh Melas, especially the one in

Allahabad. This one grabbed my attention because Amma gave me mantra in

Irvine, and I have a couple of friends at the UC there.

Your Swami Sarva... from Ramakrishna Mission looks very sweet, Prajna.

My question about Amma's guidance on this matter, Surya, is an echo of the

ongoing questions posed in the previous week about how nice it would be if

She were to speak to us, as a satsang. I was not asking GeorgeSon or Manoj,

in particular, what they think Amma would say. But saluting both of their

earlier posts on the desire to have direct guidance from our beloved Amma on

certain kinds of matters. (And because I can't do the cut and paste thing).

And in this case, whether it would be appropriate for Her children to attend

this function in particular. From what the planners look to be doing, a

contingent could process carrying Her picture, etc. loveprashanti

It rotates, though it doesn't exactly work like that either. There are Ardh (half) melas as well.

That website actually had a link to another that gave some background as to the mythology/tradition/history behind it.

There was an "Amma" booth at the Maha Kumbh Mela in 2001 in Allahabad. I was there but I was not able to find it. The mela grounds were quite huge. There was not a booth at the last melas at Ujjain, Nasik and Hardwar. I was at those as well, except for Nasik.

Amma is generally not in favor of her devotees going to be with other Gurus, though She may give varying advice to individual people at individual times. As far as attending a spiritual event, so to speak, maybe She would ask why someone wanted to go. What were they trying to accomplish? I am merely speculating here, of course.

Its funny because Rampuri Babaji had discussed putting on a sort of US Mela with me and we would bring over a bunch of Naga Babas (who are very core to the whole event of the Kumbh). We never went ahead with the idea. I remember Bikram really wanted it to happen, but he wound up doing his Yoga fair instead.

There's an invitation & e-mail link on the page, inviting churches & ashrams to participate. I wonder if Amma' organization would want to be represented. It sounds like a positive event.
