Pranam. A quote from the Rig Veda and also a question....

First, the quote,

The Primordial Vastness is the sky. The Primordial Vastness is the sphere of space. The Primordial Vastness is the mother, the father, the son. The Primordial Vastness is all the Gods, the five sorts of men, all that was born and shall be born.

-Rig Veda

And now, the question.

What are the five sorts of men? I only know of the four varnas.

Thanx in advance,

With Love

Shankaree

Let my every word be a prayer to Thee,

Every movement of my hands a ritual gesture to Thee,

Every step I take a circumambulation of Thy image,

Every morsel I eat a rite of sacrifice to Thee,

Every time I lay down a prostration at Thy feet;

Every act of personal pleasure and all else that I do,

Let it all be a form of worshiping Thee."

>From Verse 27 of Shri Aadi Shankara's Saundaryalahari

Shankaree ji,

Rig Veda

"The Primordial Vastness is the sky. The Primordial Vastness is the

sphere of space. The Primordial Vastness is the mother, the father,

the son. The Primordial Vastness is all the Gods, the five sorts of

men, all that was born and shall be born".

The Primordial vastness in Rig-Veda is personified with feminine

form otherwise identified as "Aditi". She is known by several names

such as Mistress of all Elements, The ultimate Plenum, The Mother of

Time, The Great Universal Mother, and The Mother of Gods. The abyss,

the unlimited ocean of space called Chaos, is the ultimate veil or

vesture.

The word Aditi is meant Infinite and penury too. Adi

signify "Former", Diti denotes limit or binding. This otherwise

connotes Dissemination, Distribution and Obligatory or binding.

The five sorts of men are basically "The Panch Brahma" (Brahma here

symbolizes "The Supreme Lords"). Aditi created these five sorts of

men to perform five basic activities that are called "Pancha Kritya"

such as

1. Srishti (creation)

2. Sthiti (preservation

3. Samhara (destruction)

4. Tirobhava (veiling)

5. Anugraha (grace)

These five Pancha kritya are expected to perform by thus created

Lords, as Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Mahesvara and Sadasiva.

The second level of understanding is that the Jiva or the individual

soul is enclosed within five sheaths (Kosas), which are like the

sheaths of an onion. The five sheaths are:

1. The Food-sheath (Annamaya Kosa)

2. The Vital sheath (Pranamaya Kosa)

3. The Mental sheath (Manomaya Kosa)

4. The Intellectual sheath (Vijnanamaya Kosa)

5. The Bliss sheath (Anandamaya Kosa).

The food sheath constitutes the physical body. The next three

sheaths (vital, mental and intellectual) form the subtle body. The

last sheath (bliss) forms the causal body. The individual soul

should transcend all its sheaths through meditation and become one

with the Supreme Soul which is beyond the five Kosas. Then only it

will attain liberation or freedom.

With every Jeeva these five layers are personified as five sorts of

men, born again and again

A similar scholl of thought is also considered with five Elements.

AUM Namah Shivaya
