Guest guest
Hi all, I got my rudrakshas today. I took a shower, then I wore it. I chanted om namah shivaya. Is that all I will do? Or did I do anything wrong? I plan to wear it as often as I can, if not possible, at least carry it in a pouch until I can wear it again. Can I pray to it using my own Catholic prayer like the Our Father? It's just that, I feel there is no use of me saying the mantra( might even pronounce it wrongly) if I do not understand it, what do you guys think? Guest guest
There is benefit to saying the mantra, whether you understand it or not. In one sense it is simple to understand. It is an Our Father type of prayer. It means I bow down the One Consciousness (or the One Consciousness of Infinite Goodness). Any prayer to God/Goddess with pure intent from a simple, pure heart is good. Everything else is just extraneous details. What is important is the prayer, not the beads you count it on, or what beads you use, or how you counted with them. It is always best to get initiated into a mantra by a Realized Master or Guru. How to determine who is "Realized" is another story. When you sit by a teacher and get great peace of mind and feel inspired to dive deeper into your own spirituality, then that is good. When you fall in love, you should ask for initiation. Until then you can learn the pronunciation from some audio on the Internet. It is not hard really. Just 6 syllables (5 syllable mantra plus Om added). Om Na Ma Shi Va Ya. Just google Om Namah Shivaya online audio chant or Om Namah Shivaya mp3, or something to that effect. Here is a great Realized Saint that I have had personal contact with over the years, named Shree Maa singing the mantra within a bhajan: http://www.shreemaa.org/drupal/node/326 http://www.divyajivan.org/Publication/audio_page1.htm This is one of the mantra being chanted for meditation http://www.theammashop.org/cgi-bin/bookstore/books_and_gifts.cgi?cart_id=4509351.22144 Here is a list of CDs/tapes with the mantra either being chanted or sung, mostly by my Guru, Mata Amritanandamayi, simply called Amma or Ammachi (Mother or Revered Mother respectively). The great thing is that all proceeds will go to charitable activities. They happen to also sell nice quality rudraksha as well at very reasonable prices. Ammachi will be in the UK in a few months, which is where I believe you live. She can certainly initiate you into the mantra. You can read about Her at http://www.amma.org and at http://www.amritapuri.org Here is a CD you can purchase with six different renditions on it of the mantra being chanted/sung. It is from a group of Amma's devotees and it is on that page: http://www.theammashop.org/cgi-bin/bookstore/books_and_gifts.cgi?cart_id=4509351.22144 Here is one more with several different audio samples of it being chanted in a meditative way: http://www.bookstore.siddhayoga.org/merchant/audio/mantra_0.html Just for fun, here is one link to another bhajan (song to God) where they sing the bhajan. Click on Namah Shivaya: http://www.devotionalsongs.com/lord_shiva.htm Here is a nice one, though they are chanting Om Namah Shivai http://www.bhaktisangeet.com/bhajan/dhun/shiva.html I think that should be enough for now.
