V Grenade blast kills 4 in Hindu temple By WASBIR HUSSAIN Associated Press Writer tcdacmd="cc=wdn; dt"; GAUHATI, India (AP) -- A grenade exploded in a Hindu temple in northeast India Wednesday, killing at least four people and leaving 40 others injured, mainly in a stampede that followed the blast, police said. The attack in Imphal, the capital of Manipur state, came during a major Hindu festival - the birthday of the god Krishna, said police officer Kasim Ali. The injured included an American and three other foreign nationals, an army officer said on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorized to talk to reporters. No other details were immediately available. The violence at the temple, owned by the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, came despite tight police and paramilitary security in and around the temple where hundreds of Hindus congregated for the festival. Goswami said whoever detonated the explosive apparently escaped in the chaos that followed. He did not provide any other details on suspects or how the attack was carried out, and there was no claim of responsibility. Dozens of insurgencies have festered for years across Manipur and several other northeastern states. Nearly all are fighting for autonomy or independent homelands for the region's indigenous peoples, most of them ethnically closer to Burma and China than to the rest of India. The militants say the central government in New Delhi - 1,000 miles to the west - exploits the northeast's rich natural resources while doing little to improve its poor infrastructure and alleviate widespread unemployment. © 2006 The Associated Press. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/I/INDIA_GRENADE_ATTACK?SITE=CADIU&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT Attack at Hare Krishna Temple in India Kills 5, Wounds 40 By VOA News 17 August 2006 Indian police say an explosion at a Hare Krishna temple in the northeastern state of Manipur has killed five people and wounded at least 40 others, including eight foreigners. Authorities say some victims of the bomb attack Wednesday evening are in critical condition, and the death toll could rise. The blast went off at a temple of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, or ISKCON, in a heavily guarded security zone of Imphal, the Manipur state capital. A large crowd was at the scene of the explosion, taking part in holiday celebrations marking the traditional birthday of the Hindu god Krishna. Authorities say there is no definite motive for the attack, which they are describing as a powerful bomb blast. Other accounts report the explosion came from a hand grenade thrown by unidentified attackers, who then escaped in the confusion. Indian authorities say one of those killed was a child. The wounded include at least three Americans and a French national. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities said they believe a local group was responsible. At least 10 rebel guerrilla groups - some seeking autonomy, others campaigning for expanded rights for ethnic minorities - operate in Manipur state, part of India's turbulent northeast. Most residents of the area are Hindu. Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters http://www.voanews.com/english/2006-08-17-voa10.cfm How low will we go?
