Dalai Lama Statement

Amaravati, Jan. 16, 2006: The Dalai Lama acknowledged the contribution of Babasaheb Dr B.R. Ambedkar to Buddhism. Addressing the gathering during the valedictory of Kalachakra, the Dalai Lama said Dr Ambedkar had brought renaissance to Buddhism when it was close to extinction.

He returned to the theme while speaking to media persons later, saying that he had high respect for Dr Ambedkar and Dr Dharmapala from Sri Lanka for the sacrifices they made to keep Buddhism alive.

He praised the State government for trying to conserve Buddhist archeological treasures. He wanted more Buddhist study centers rather than monuments.. He announced a donation of Rs. 30 lakhs for the study centre at Dhyana Buddha Vihar and said “tonnes of books” would be available for them. The seer said that Buddhist monks and nuns should take a cue from Christians doing charity work. “Mother Teresa and her service to humanity are never forgotten,” he said.

He repeated that Hinduism and Buddhism are twin religions except for a few concepts. “I am aware that this has raked up some controversy, but concepts like Karma, Moksha, and Samadhi are common in both the religions. However, Buddhism doesn’t speak about Atma,” he said………..
