Guest guest
Sh. Dushyant Trivedi, Grishneshwar jyotirlinga location "Blessed by VerulNagar, there is no other place like it on this earth, where Lord Grishneswara resides, the best place on this earth." – Madhwamunishwar On this holy pilgrimage of the JyotirLingas of Lord Shankar, the last one, with out which the pilgrimage will not be considered as complete, is the twelfth JyotirLinga, of Grishneshwar. About 30 km towards the west side of Aurangabad, there is a village called Verul. In this village there is a place of pilgrimage called Shivalay, when the great Holy Trilinga of Ghrishneshwar is located. The stories associated with Verul, Shivalay and Ghrishneswar is as follows; This was originally a settlement of the Naga tribes. The place of the Nagas is Bambi, which is known as "Varul". In Marathi "Varul" gradually changed into "Verul" and is known by this name. River Yelaganga flows here. The name "Verul" is derived from Yelaganga, on bank of which this village is located.. There was a king by the name "Yela" whose capital was Yelapar, or Yelur or Verul. Sthala purana of Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Once, a king was on hunting. While hunting, the king did not spare the animals brought up by the Rishis and munis too. Disturbed by this, the irate Saints cursed the king, as a result of which, his entire body was infested by insects. Smitten by this curse, the king began to wander in the forest. Once he was very thirsty and could not found water any where in the vicinity to quench his thirst. At last he could found water in the hole made by the group of a horse. A miracle happened that the king's body was relieved of all the insects as he drank water. The king did severe penance (Tapa) there. Lord Brahma was pleased and appeared before him and installed Parashta Teerth there. He also created a huge and holy lake near by, known as Brahma sarovar, later came to be known as Shivalay. There is another story of Shivalay : Shiva and Parvati were playing chess on Mount Kailasa. Paravti checkmated Shiva. Lord Shankar was annoyed with this and went away southward. He went and stayed at a place on the Sahyadri range, where there was cool breeze. This place was given the name of Maheshamauli Bhainsmal. Parvati came there in search of him. She won the heart of Shiva in the form of a mountain tribal girl. They both spent some time there happily. This forest came to be known as Kamyakavan. Lord Mahesha forbade crows from entering the area of Maheshamouli or Bhainsmal. One day, Paravti was very thirsty. Shankara pierced earth with his trident and got the water of Bhogavati from Patal (Nether world). That became popular by name Shivalay. The Shivalay extends a little ahead where Shivanadi (Shivanand) meets it and a little further, Yelaganga flows. When Shiva and Parvati were staying here pleasantly, a hunter by the name Sudhanwa came there in search of hunt. A miracle happened then and Sudhanwa turned into a woman. He was disturbed and did severe penance there. Shankara was pleased and appeared. And said, Sudhanwa was a woman by birth in his previous life. Thus, Shankara turned Sudhanwa into Yelaganga River. Thus, Punya Sarita Yelaganga was born in the Kamyawana. Later, it became the bathing place called Dhara Teerth or 'Sita's Snangriha' flow through Verul village. Once Parvati, was about to fill her hair parting with vermillion and saffron, in Kamyavana. She kept them in her left palm and mixed the water of Shivalay in it. With the right thumb she started mixing them. Then a miracle occurred, vermillion turned into a ShivaLinga and a great light appeared in it. Parvati was awe struck at this. Then Lord Shankara said: "This Linga was hidden in the Patala", he could brought up while he was creating water for her by his trident. Then a bubble emerged from the earth with water (Kashikhand). Parvati kept that glorious light in Linga and installed it there. This Purna (complete) JyotirLinga is called Kunkumeshwar. As Dakshayani created this Linga with her thumb, she named it Grishneshwara (Grishna means friction) to it. There used to live a Brahmin by the name of Sudharma, who belonged to the lineage of sage Bhardwaj. He was a great devotee of lord Shiva. Sudeha was his wife. Sudharma had no son. Sudeha desires for a son. She expressed her desire to Sudharma but he did not listen to her pleas. One day Sudeha had gone for an outing accompanied by her companions. Incidentally a quarrel ensured among them and her companions made fun of her issue less status. Sudeha became very sad. After returning to her hermitage, she narrated the whole incident to Sudharma. Sudharma meditated on the form of Shiva and threw two flowers, towards his wife. He thought that if Sudeha picks up the flower, which he had thrown with his right hand, then certainly a son would be born. But if she picks up the another flower then there is no chance of her giving birth to a son. Unfortunately Sudeha picked up the flower which Sudharma had thrown with his left hand. Sudharma told his wife that she was never going to become a mother. He advised her to dedicate her life in the devotion of lord Shiva. When Sudeha learnt that there was no chance of her becoming a mother, she insisted her husband to marry for a second time, so that he could become a father. But Sudharma refused to marry for the second. Sudeha brought her younger sister-Dhushma to the hermitage and married her with reluctant Sudharma. Dhushma proved to be a very faithful wife. She engaged herself in the service of Sudharma and Sudeha. She also used to worship the Parthiva-linga of Shiva daily. After her worship she used to immerse the Parthiva lingas in a pond. This way, when she had accomplished the worship of one lakh Parthiva lingas, lord Shiva blessed her with a son. Sudharma was extremely pleased but Sudeha became jealous of her own sister. When the child grew up, he was married to a beautiful brahmin girl. Dhushma instructed the bride to take a special care of Sudeha. So the bride engaged herself in the service of everybody. She took special care of looking into the needs of Sudeha. But still, Sudeha's jealousy did not diminish. One day gripped by excessive jealousy and anger, she killed Dhushma's son while he was asleep. She cut his body into many pieces and threw those pieces into the same pond, in which Dhushma used to immerse the Parthiva lingas. When the daughter in law noticed a piece of flesh on the bed she started crying. She went to Dhushma and narrated the whole story. Hearing the news of her son's killing, Dhushma too started crying Sudeha also wept artificially. Sudharma arrived there. Though he himself was very sad yet he instructed Dhushma to do the daily worship of Parthiva linga as usual. Dhushma obeyed the command of her husband, She worshipped the Parthiva lingas and went to the pond of immense. By the blessings of lord Shiva, her son was standing at the bank of the pond alive. He came towards his mother and said- "Mother! I have become alive even after my death." Dhushma was still engrossed in her thoughts of lord Shiva, so she could not listen to her son. Lord Shiva appeared and blessed Dhushma. He also expressed his desire to punish her wicked sister - Sudeha for her evil deed, but Dhushma requested him to forgive her. She also requested lord Shiva to stay there forever. Lord Shiva accepted her demand and established himself in the form of Dhushmeshwar Jyotirlinga. Sudharma and Sudeha arrived at that place and worshipped Shiva. At last everybody returned home happily.
