Guest guest
Female is 36 Kapha-Pitta from birth to this year. Had gastric bypass surgery within last six months. Weight has decreased from near 350 lbs to near 250. Since gastic bypass female expresses complaints of very noticeable increase in gas and discomfort. What are the results of this radical surgery and it's implications on the Doshas and how to help re-establish balance? Guest guest
Dear Ash, After loosing so much weight at such a price, some more weight in brain by way of informations is OK. Some reading is in order. Someone who points out his own deficiencies must be believed fully. Look at ( only relevant portion for this message) of what MDs write about other effects of Gastric Bypass surgery - "GBS" ( at http://www.webmd.com/hw/weight_control/hw252819.asp ) [ 1. About one-third of all people having surgery for obesity develop gallstones or a nutritional deficiency condition such as anemia or osteoporosis.3, 4 2. An iron and vitamin B12 deficiency occurs more than 30% of the time. About 50% of those with an iron deficiency develop anemia. 3. The bypassed stomach may enlarge, resulting in hiccups and bloating. In a gastric bypass, the part of the intestine where many minerals and vitamins are most easily absorbed is bypassed. Because of this, you may have a deficiency in iron, calcium, magnesium, or vitamins. This can lead to long-term problems, such as osteoporosis. To prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies, you may need to work with a dietitian to plan meals, and you may need to take nutrient supplements and injections of vitamin B12.] Now this Gas and bloating is already noted as a side effect of GBS. The major digestion of the food occurs in the area of small intestine which ayurveda calls "grahani". To understand what this author writes further, please read a recent message first: ayurveda/messages/6947 ayurveda/messages/6964 IF the importance of Grahani is now understood, it is easy to see that GBS creates Sangrahani disease, causing almost no absorption of food eaten after surgery. Modern medicine lives to its true color, creating many diseases, suppressing one. What body will do then, use the fat deposits and covert fat and proteins to energy. What happens thereafter is total indigestion as the food does not meet adequate secretion of digestive juices either in stomach or in small intestine. Due to conversion of proteins and fats to energy, the tendons and ligaments loose elasticity or glue which gives elasticity, causing herniation as admitted by MDs on WebMD site. That is also reason why stomach enlarges. Now elasticity itself is due to bio-energy, so GBS reduces energy levels or life force in short, since energy through food route is partically closed. Obese but more lively human is replaced by slim but "dead" human in terms of energy ! In contrast, Ayurvedic approach for loosing weight is sketchily outlined at: ayurveda/messages/3820 ayurveda/messages/4113 ayurveda/messages/5820 Now let us look at what your friend should do. As suggested in the message on "Malabsorption and IBS", she should keep taking raw milk and buttermilk, which is easy to digest and may even cause some further weight loss too. See a message on how to use buttermilk ayurveda/messages/6770 Raw milk will give B12, which is an essential requirement if she wants to avoid nervous sytem disorders such as MS later. Other than B12, raw milk is a complete food for vegitarians. All vitamins are present. Goat milk is best. In order to take care of possible gallstone and increase liver secretions, either liver restoring herbs such as milk thistle or detox approaches discussed in above messages are suggested.
