Guest guest
Can anyone recommend a good Vedic Jeweler in the United States. I would really prefer a personal recommendation from a satisfied customer and not just someone you know of. A jeweler that didn't do side deals with astrologers either. I am a bit sensitive in this regard, as I recently had an incident of being steered, unbeknown to me, to gem dealer that was getting a cut from the gem dealer. Highly unethical in my book, and from a jyotish gem dealer in the US, who would have thought. Thank you in advance, Chaya
Guest guest
Hello Chaya: I'm new to this forum and didn't realize how much mail is generated a day so it's taken me a long time to get through that and answer your mail. In your post you say that a "gem dealer that was getting a cut from the gem dealer." I suppose you mean that a gem dealer was getting a cut from the astrologer. I asked my uncle about this and he did say that it was a common practice and did seem highly unethical to him. You see, my uncle was trained by my grandfather in astrology and used to help him many years ago, though he doesn't practice since my grandfather passed away. My family has used a Vedic Jeweler in the United States with great satisfaction several times. My mother, brother and myself all had jewelry made for remedies by him. I would recommend him highly. I haven't seen a response to your query yet, but maybe many people have answered you off list. Just let me know if you are still looking for a referal and will send you his info. Guest guest
Dear Draupadi: You are right I got "word tied" on my post. Actually, I have only heard from one person and that was a jewelry house so I appreciate your response a lot. Please send me your jewelers info. Guest guest
Dear Ladies, Pardon this interruption into this seemingly 'private' exchange! Please enlighten us on this forum! Who do you think is the bigger swindler? Professional Jyotishis that you have experienced personally? OR Professional Jewellers? Professional Jewellers selling vedic gems?? The suspense is killing us!! Guest guest
Dear Rohini: I guess I never thought anyone was really interested in this topic since Draupadi was the only respondent. As far as private exchange, it is only that insofar as Draupadi's response was posted on a board with over 5000 members but, your certainly not an interruption. In my situation between astrologer and gem dealer, it didn't get to the purchase point before I walked out. Swindling seems rather harsh, but now that I think about it, I was being led, or manipulated into a situation that benefitted two parties by some colusion they didn't divulge up front. So, on second thought perhaps your term is accurate. I won't name names and it was a simple case of getting a reading and the astrologer prescribing gems and of course being recommended to the "most trusted gem dealer in the trade." I contacted them for the gems and just about ready to purchase when a chance remark by one of my friends about shopping around for the best price got me thinking that wasn't a bad idea, since I was about to put down some serious money in gemstones. So, I went back to the astrologer and asked for another source of gems that he might know of and he started trying to maneuver me back to the first gem dealer saying things like you can't trust anyone else and they would rip me off. I don't like high pressure sales and that is a real red flag for me. By then I felt that something wasn't on the up and up. I backed off the sale and just started asking around when I encountered astrologically minded people at parties and such. It took quite awhile, but I finally met an astrologer, at least one willing to talk about it, who knew of this dealer and the kickback, as he was offered this himself once. He turned them down and he doesn't get reading referals from this gem dealer anymore. I wouldn't have minded it so much if it was disclosed up front. It would have been unsettling and I would have probably shopped elsewhere, but at least had an air of honesty. Of course, that's why they don't disclose such mutually beneficial relationships.I'm not implying that all astrologers are doing this, but I would ask up front before any service is performed. I don't mind jewelers selling gems, but I think astrologers should not get kickbacks. Seems highly unethical to me. Gem dealers and astrologers who collude in this manner should not be allowed unless the kickback is donated to a verifiable charity. Now that I wouldn't mind. Guest guest
Dear Chaya, Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Actually, this is a very important aspect of *commercial* jyotish and reminiscent of anecdotes of similar liasons between medical practitioners and pharmacies/pharmaceutical concerns where similar subtle to not too subtle sharing has been reported to exist in some regions and certain time periods. This does not necessarily reduce the effectiveness of such practitioners but certainly is not ideal. I do not want to create too much consternation on this already volatile forum but having calmly observed at least a segment of jyotish practitioners (non-internet, real time, real life) for some time, I am not so convinced that the situation is too simple or black and white. I know morality and piety and 'shuddha aacharan' is made a big deal of for jyotishis and all professions associated with it, it is not necessarily associated with or guaranties performance! Like I said, it is very complex, over a short bit as well as the long haul. I know of jyotishis who were mistaken as 'commercial' more than a decade ago or earlier by individuals and offered cuts, similar to what you describe. When protested against such an approach, the gem- dealers stated openly that this seemed to be the prevailing practice back then and it was an honest mistake! The gem dealers were just doing business as per the prevailing and endorsed-through-support norms back then. They are still in business and doing very well and despite what may sound immoral practice on their part, I am sure that it is the 'central tendency' that determines karma and not isolated infractions. What you describe is a lot more serious and I am glad for you that you managed to walk out of it. However, you could do that because your need was probably not critical and driven more by curiosity than need for a remedy. It is associated with perception of misery too. WE all have varying thresholds for breaking-down. My heart goes out to the poor individual who is at the end of his/her wits, options. Some are placed in this reality perhaps as examples! But then, again, there is hardly a classic in jyotish and related literature which includes an example! Ergo, uncertainty remains ...
