Prabhus,

When Citraketu achieves darshan of Lord Sesa, Anantadeva in Canto 6 of

Srimad-Bhagavatam he offers among many other obeisances these words

(Text 48): "bhu-mandalam sarsapayati yasya mudhni / tasmai namo

bhagavate 'stu shasra-mudhne."(I offer my respectful obeisances unto You

who has thousands of hoods, holding all the universes on His heads like

seeds of mustard.)

Besides being beautiful words of devotion, it was suggested to me they

might be very effective protection to repeat, when moving into and

living in a rattlesnake (or other poisonous snake) infested environment.

Can you confirm or comment on the effectiveness of such a practice

please and whether it is appropriate to cultivate a special devotion to

Lord Sesa in such circumstances?

Any other way(s) to cultivate a specific devotion to Him in this Form,

or should intercession, protection and the allaying of fears be sought

for in another way? Is it possible to befriend the serpents and nagas

so that they become protectors on your local land? THANKS for all

detailed and helpful responses!

The specific deity to worship for propitiation of snakes (i.e. Kala Sarpa Dosha) is Lord Murugan Swami (Lord Kartikkeya in N. India). Last year this time, during the really bad influence of Kala Sarpa Dosh, some people were told by some Gurus to do the japa of Murugan, whose worship propitiates snakes & Nagas, and lessens the effects of Kala Sarpa Dosha.

Furthermore, I have seen that where there are powerful deities present, and their worship is being performed properly, the presences of various snakes and Nags can be expected. Many times they hang around to protect the deity and property.
