Guest guest
Dear Group, I always tend to disagree with Todd on the issue of veg vs non-veg, but I also cannot but bow down before his excellent arguments. This brings us to the question, "how much does our own views of life cloud our understanding of illness and its cure?". I have tackled this in a very old post earlier where I tried to argue that we need to differentiate people not only on their physical composition but also on their calling. We cannot advocate a sattvic diet to an armyman or a tamasic diet to a priest, no matter what the exigencies. But here I wish to dwell on another issue, the healers perception. Do we have pet notions that we should stay away from while dealing with illness? In homeopathy, Dr Hahnemann noticed that many healers had their own favourite group of medicines which they frequently resorted to. Needless to say this led to many failures. He therefore advised homeopathic doctors to learn how to make the mind completely blank while case taking. He forbade presumptions/jumping into conclusions and asked the doctors to decide on the remedy only after the entire case is taken and matched with the remedies, thus throwing up a particular group. He also asked them to regularly study the materia medica (he said everyday) so that they would be well versed with all remedies. I think this bit of advice is good for all healers. We (please forgive me for using this word as I am not a qualified physician) should try to identify not only with the illness but the external circumstances of the patient, his physical and mental needs and also his stage of life. Try suggesting a sattvic diet to a newly married couple !! They will simply take one look at you and disappear !! Of course in patients who require a rajasic/tamasic diet we should ensure that the elimination system is strengthened so that the toxic remanants do not easily overpower the system. This is probably the least we can do. Nowadays we are seeing so many incidents of stress in the Army. The Indian Army is now advising the force to take lessons on meditation and also to take recourse to ayurveda and homeopathy to tackle stress. But certainly they will not encourage a sattvic diet. Armymen are trained to eat anything, from rodents, snakes to even human flesh.
