Todd's posting on colon cleansing was much appreciated. For years

one has heard these types of comments that the bowels hold large

quantity of old feces this is rediculoous and has no observable

facts to support it.

Also we should be careful not to equate western style colon therapy

with the Ayurvedic concept of Basti. They are not the same therapy

and have completely different objectives. Plain water enema or colon

wash is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve in Basti most

of the time. Basti is a classic therapy for removing excesa Vata

Dosha, consequently most therapies use unctuous substances to

achieve this and the water is just a medium for delivering the oil

and vata reducing herbs. Plain water has a drying quality and has

the potential to aggravate Vata, this would be especially true in

the case of colon washes since the water is administered

continuously and in volume. Anyone with Vata disease should avoid

such therapies. Veerachan followed by Basti achieves much more than

colon therapy in a much more scientific manner. Colon washes are a

simplistic concept that is only applicable to a minority who need

drying and draining therapies everyone else should avoid them.

Clearly such therapies are not suited to anyone with severe mental

or emotional problems, chronic weakness, nervous system imbalances,

hypereactive states, and or chronic pain symptoms.

Dear Dr Phadke,

Thank you very much for this informative post. Constipation is the

mother of all illnesses. Nowadays we take fibreless processed food

and also prefer refined wheat fluor and polished white rice. All this

invariably leads to constipation.

We also have the habit of suppressing our urge to evacuate when we

are busy. Then there is the modern toilet which does not allow proper

pressure required for evacuation. We also have the habit of reading

our newspaper inside the toilet, seating comfortably on the western

commode, and use the bathroom as a "thinking" room.

We also forget that we should take a light, exclusively vegetarian

dinner at least an hour before retiring for the night. We ignore

going to bed by 10PM as our favourite TV serials start at 10:30PM.

This severely impedes our elimination system as it works the hardest

between 10PM to 1:00AM.

If all this will not promote constipation, what will?

Regards,

Jagannath.

I agree with you Liz. Regular enemas can also aggravate the

constipation. This may be because the enemas drain out the probiotics

along with the faecal matter.
