There's no dress code but most people dress modestly. A lot of old

timers and people volunteering wear white but visitors wear whatever

they wear. You'll see lots of people in Indian dress, whether they

are Indian or not. You will also see folks in whatever the usual

clothing is.

When you go to get Amma's hug, you are asked to wipe your face with

a tissue and to remove anything that could poke Amma such as

eyeglasses, hats, hair ornaments. You leave these items along with

wallet or whatever with one of the volunteers until after your hug.

The face wiping etc. might be more important to women who are

visiting. Facial makeup will be wiped off so it does not wind up on

amma's white. A hairdo that requires a clip will be changed for the

hug when the clip is removed.

Enjoy your visit with Amma.

Om Namashivaya,

If you go to the website http://www.ammadc.org/washDC2006.asp,

there is a link to "Frequently Asked Questions" In that link,

there is the following question and answer

12.What is the appropriate dress around Amma?

Ladies: Out of respect, it is customary in Mother's tradition for the

devotees to dress modestly. We humbly ask ladies to cover their

shoulders and to wear dresses or skirts below the knees. Please do not

wear see-through dresses or tight clothing that reveal the shape of

the body. Gentlemen: No shorts please!

I don't know how "official" this is, but this is the best I

can do. I guess hats are ok, but shorts aren't

If you get there early, you can stand near where Amma comes in, and you¹ll

see the pada puja, which is very nice. May even get an extra hug or touch

from Amma.

(about arriving early to the program)

Pada puja is exquisite! One of the most fulfilling moments of my life (besides receiving mantra initiation and a name from Amma) was watching devotees perform pada puja on stage at the end of darshan at Amritapuri.....the depth of love She expresses when Her devotees are worshipping Her in this way breaks my heart wide open. For me, nothing evokes the bliss of devotion more than watching Amma's facial expression (eyes and smile) during these moments!

Jai Ma!
