Rahu:The darker Force

Rahu is a shadow which falls on the virtual axis of Sun and real

axis of Moon. The cutting point is Rahu and second point 180 Degree

far away is Ketu. The ancient legend says that the demons wanted

nectar which was churned out of the ocean. So one of the demon took

the shape of an angel (Devata) and occupied the seat between Moon

and Sun. Shree Vishnu who was dividing the elixir of immortality

between angels took notice of this act.

He fired his Sudarshan chakra towards the demon. The demon who

already took some nectar down his throat tried to escape. His head

was cut off and he was divided in two halfs. But since he took some

nectar he did not died and became immortal. From that time onwards

the head portion is called Rahu and tail portion is called Ketu.

Since their reality was revealed by Sun and Moon so they always

create problems for them through eclipses. Now if you look into

modern day science you will see that this story stands true today.

True in the sense that Rahu or shadow travels between Sun and Moon.

It is their enemy in the sense that eclipses (Both Lunar and Solar )

are formed when Rahu is 180 Degree from either of the planets( Other

conditions apply). Rahu is Dhumravarna and it is the cause of

several different phenomenon on earth.

In vedic astrology Sun and Moon are defined to be significant. "

Chandrama manso Jatakah" that is Moon is defined as the heart. Sun

is defined as the soul. But i have seen that Rahu can give a

significant rise to someone in the present world. When Rahu is

strong in the horoscope then it will make a person dominating and

powerful. Such a person is prone to consumption of some kind of

narcotic substance. They sleep late in the night and has a

fascination for rough tough life. They will be tempted and can go

for illegal income too. They are not afraid of law and court cases.

They have to take some kind of medicine regularly and they are

materialistically successful. In the present world a weaker Rahu can

lead to short term gains.

All this tells us that Rahu is powerful now and it foretells the

presence and power of darker forces. Mahakavi ( The great poet) Shri

Tulsidas has rightly remarked that Kaliyuga will see the

glorification of evil things. It is interesting to note that most of

the politicians do carry a very strong Rahu.

Here is one more interesting thing. Sandalwood is been surrounded by

snakes and snakes are often attracted towards it. Rahu is defined as

snake in Indian astrology and Rahu rules Sandalwood according to

Shastras. So the attraction of snakes towards Sandalwood may have

been actually derived from the observation of seers.

Rahu is not always bad. It is more like the Kundalini residing in

our solar plexus ( Kundalini is Sarpini and Rahu is a Sarpa or

snake). It arises when we shun all the "Mayas" and then it moves

towards brahmarandhra ( Which is Ketu). In astrology Rahu gives you

the fruits of all accumulated "Punyas". Ketu gives you results of

all bad deeds. It is good if someone faces a Ketu period early in

his life. Someone who is facing the Rahu period should avoid bad

deeds and temptations. The next period which belongs to Jupiter

brings bad results if someone gets attracted to sins during Rahu

major. The dasha Shidra of these two planets brings disastrous

results for people who accumulates sin during Rahu major. Jupiter

brings them down.

JAYA JAGANNATHA!

Dear Alok,

Namaste.

Excellent exposition on Rahu. However there are some point toward the end

which I cannot agree with, unless you can quote some shastra to support

your statements. One is that Rahu gives the results of punya (pious

activities) and Ketu gives the results of paapa (sinful activities).

According to what I have learned from Sanjay and the Puranas, Rahu

indicates the things that keep you back from spiritual advancement (avidya

or ignorance and raaga or attachment) and Ketu indicates the things that

may help you to advance (moksha-liberation). This is because Rahu is the

head with all the senses, and the senses like poisonous snakes, are

attracted to the nectar of sense enjoyment. And Ketu is the beheaded body,

which became free from desires by losing its senses. The role that you

have assigned them is usually assigned to Jupiter (punya) and Saturn

(paapa) which will reveal the pious or sinful reactions connected to a

certain house while transitting it. By the way, Lord Vishnu took the form

of Mohini-murti to slay Rahu. This form is called the ultimately

attractive feminine form of Lord Vishnu, which enamoured all the demons.

In the Bhagavata Purana it is explained that when Lord Vishnu revealed

this form to Lord Siva, he lost control and madly ran after her wanting to

have sexual intercurse with Mohini-murti. So strong is Vishnu's maya that

it would illusion even a great demigod and yogi like Lord Siva.

The other thing I doubt in this description is the statement that Jupiter

dasa brings down those who become asttached to sins in Rahu dasa. I lived

a sinful life during Rahu mahadasa (eating meat etc.). But when Jupiter

mahadasa arrived, I gave it up and took to the worship of Shree Krishna.

So I wold say that much depends on the position of these planets in the

chart. And a last note: Rahu gives strong spirituality in the case he is

the Atmakaraka.

Hello Alok ji,

Rahu is not always good too.

It shows both ups and downs....sudden up and sudden down.

its like alternating current diagram.

but if it is exalted too and only placed in good houses like 10th or

11th.. then only it gives good results.

Thanks

Tarun

JAYA JAGANNATHA!

Dear Alok,

Namaste.

A few further thoughts:

Good fruits are the result of pious activities and bad fruits are the

result of sinful activities. I still do not think that we can unanimously

link Rahu to punya and Ketu to paapa. Punya-karma is usually shown in the

5th house (if it has benefic aspects or occupation). So I would consider

Rahu to be inauspicious in the 5th house, as well as in the 4th, which

indicates the heart and it will usually indicate ill feelings towards

others. The only case when Rah can be considered favourable for

spirituality is when he is the Atmakaraka. I am convinced abpout this,

even if some people would exclude Rahu from the range of Chara Karakas.

Hare Krishna Gauranga Prabhu, Sorry i did not put my words in details. I am referring to poorva punyas or punyas of previous incarnation. Rahu , when it is good it just gives you the results of those poorva punyas in a fast forward kind of thing. Ketu is mokshakarka. For moksha it should remove all your karmas and effects. So it will give results of previous bad deeds and will remove them one by one. It works in a magical way and leads you to liberation.

Guru dasha is good in context to rahu dasha. Eating mear etc does not make a person bad. It depends on position of planet to futher understand it.
