Dear Neeraj,

Lord Rama has explained about these karmas in UTTER KAND in Ramcharitmanas giving lecture to younger brother Bharat through a very simple way as - "PARHIT SARIS DHARAM NAHI BHAI, PARPIDA SAM NAHI ADHMAHI ".

As Parhit [ To help others] by all means as Mansa, Vaacha & Karmana is Saatvic and Parpida [ To hurt others] is taamsic and neither to help others nor to hurt others, to do only for self is Raajsic.Plz read Yoga - Vasistha for

removing all the doubts.

Yes you are right. Protecting ourselves is not always

Saatwic or Rajasic. It depends upon the circumstances.

When there is no self interest or passion and one is

doing good deed it is saatwic, if passion comes or if

there is self interest, it may become Raajasic (again

depends upon karma and other circumstances).

 

Narsimha Ji's book "An Integrated approach to vedic

astrology" has a beautiful example regarding Saatwic,

Rajasik and tamasik guna.
