Guest guest
Namashkar Im not sure if you have read the excellent book "Secret of the Vedas" by Sri Aurobindo. I will paraphrase sections of it. Most people think of the Vedas as barbaric documents written by barbarians worshipping strange Gods. But Sri Aurobindo couldnt digest this- surely our Rishis were smarter than this? So he set out to look for hidden meanings in the Vedas. He found that Western people had mistranslated several poems of the Vedas to fit with their own version of the "truth". So there is one where the Demons build a dam across the rivers of heaven(which flow with Ghee, Soma wine etc). Indra comes to fight, and uses his thunderbolt to destroy the demons. The westerns, thinking in terms of the discredited Aryan invasion theory, say this shows a battle between Aryans and Dravidians, when the Dravids dammed the 7 rivers of Punjab. Of course, they had to serioulsy mis-translate to reach this opionion. Sri Aurobindo takes a different view. 1st, Indra is the king of Indriya(or sense organs, like look, touch, feel hear etc). The Person who can control his senses and mind is Indra. The rivers are the Divine Truth that continously flows into us from God- it is pure like Ghee, and makes you drunk like Wine. It is our own inner demons that build dams across these rivers. Then Indra- the Pure man of Light, uses his thunder to to destroy the dams of ignorance and darkness so that the rivers of Joy and Bliss can flow from Heaven to the Earth. But beatiful imagery! In this Indra needs the help of Agni, the Divine Spark of Mytic fire in us. This spark is too weak, and we have to strenghten it with meditation. In Tantra, this is also called Kundalini- that we have to strengthen with meditation. The Soma Ras that the Gods drink, is then the bliss we feel when Kundalini reaches 7th chakra( or 7th heaven, as the saying goes). To be continued...............
