Guest guest
I'm working on an article about Naimisharanya, part of which will focus on the Gomati River. I've found a number of places where it is mentioned in various Puranas, Mahabharata and Ramayana. However, I'm looking for a traditional account of its origin. There seem to be at least two Gomati Rivers -- according to Puranic tradition are they the same? There is the larger Gomati in UP which flows past Naimisharanya and Lucknow, and there is a smaller river by the same name that goes through Dwarka in Gujarat. Some persons use the accounts of these two interchangeably. However, I've not come across any evidence that this is accepted in sastra. For example the Ganga is described in various Puranas to be manifest in many places. However, I've not seen any such description of the Gomati. Skanda 7.4-5 gives a description of the origin of the Gomati, but it is part of the Prabhasa Ksetra Mahatmya and clearly is speaking about the Gomati in Dwarka. So more clearly, my questions are: (A) Does anyone know of any literary evidence that the two rivers are considered the same? And/or (B) Does anyone know of any other literary accounts of the origin of the Gomati? I went to Naimisharanya last year and spoke with various pandits and local sadhus, with no luck. I've searched all over the web and also gone through 8 or 10 Puranas, Mahabharata and various versions of Ramayana (Valmiki, Kritivasa, Kamba, Tulsidas). So far the only stories I have found are in the Dvaraka-mahatmya section of Garga-samhita and the above Skanda Purana reference -- both of which are clearly speaking about the Gomati in Dwarka. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
