Unesco to restore Prambanan temple

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation

(UNESCO) would help restore Prambanan temple that was damaged by the

recent killer earthquake in Indonesia.

The decision to restore the historical temple that was built in 10th

century was made on account of its record as the world heritage,

UNESCO said in a statement released on Wednesday.

The agency said it would not only help refurbish Prambanan temple but

also other temples that were affected by the May 27 tectonic

earthquake that killed more than 6,000 people in Yogyakarta and

central Java provinces on May 27.

The Prambanan Temple and Yogyakarta world heritage redemption

programme would be carried out together by the Indonesian Culture and

Tourism Ministry, Yogyakarta-based Gajah Mada University and the

International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

"UNESCO has been committed to assisting US in seeking fund sources to

finance restoring damaged temples," Culture and Tourism Minister Jero

Wacik said yesterday.

UNESCO would allocate USD 9,30,000 to help save all the temples in

Yogyakarta, the statement said.
