Guest guest
Kolkata fans invoke god for Brazilian triumph IANS Wednesday, June 07, 2006 21:23 IST KOLKATA: With only a day to go before the soccer carnival kicks off in Germany, a Kolkata club performed a yagna for the invincibility of Brazil in the World Cup. At a local temple in south Kolkata, members of Sabuj Sangha performed an elaborate ritual with the chanting of Vedic hymns for their favourite team Brazil and distributed sweets as fans of the adopted Latin American country, including housewives, sat through the entire show. "India may not be playing in the World Cup but Brazil is our representative there and hence this ritual," said one of the organisers of the club in Kalighat area, where even the walls are adorned with graffiti of Ronaldo and Ronaldinho in action. "We prayed for Ronaldinho and Ronaldo particularly," said Abhijit, a member of the club that earlier had performed rituals for the well- being of film star Amitabh Bachchan and also for the return of former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly to the Indian team. In a city where soccer mania is plain jingoism - dividing the Bengali population between the arch-rival clubs of East Bengal and Mohun Bagan for several decades - it is Brazil that unites the people when it comes to international soccer though Diego Maradona's Argentina still holds its own among some. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1034026
