Guest guest Posted June 5, 2006 Report Share Posted June 5, 2006 Girl ties knot with snake idol By Indo Asian News Service Bhubaneswar, June 2 (IANS) A girl reportedly got married to the idol of a snake in Orissa because 12 years ago in her dreams she saw a snake as her husband. The bizarre ceremony was performed at Balianta village, about 14 km from here, Wednesday in the presence of more than 100 people, local media reported Friday. The girl, Bimbala Bhoi, 25, used to visit a snake hole located near the backyard of their house and prayed there everyday, the Oriya daily Dharitri reported. The girl who stays with her mother and brother suffered from a serious disease five years ago. She was admitted to a local hospital where her condition deteriorated, the daily reported. She got cured only after she worshipped the 'snake god' near the snake hole, the paper said. Although her mother wanted her to marry a local youth, the girl who worked as a daily wage earner, insisted on marrying the snake idol that was made of metal, the report said. The marriage rituals were performed near the snake hole in traditional Vedic custom way with exchange of rings and hymns being chanted. Two village families performed the role of parents of the bride and groom. The couples were given new clothes to wear, people feasted and danced to the sounds of drums and cymbals. After marriage, Bimbala said she would stay near the snake hole where her family has already constructed a hut, the news portal odisha.com said. 'It was the desire of God which we cannot prevent,' the girl's brother was quoted as saying who reportedly bore all the marriage expenses.
