Guest guest
Happy world environment day to all. We should strive collectively to improve our harmony with the environment for optimum health. We are all bathed in various types of energy field. These energy fields can be described for convenience as the electrostatic field caused by the ionosphere, the magnetic field caused by the earth's magnetism along with its changes caused by solar flares; and lastly, the electromagnetic environmental pollution caused by all the modern equipment in our houses, offices, schools, etc. 1. The static field around earth. We live in a natural electrostatic field. The visual experience of this field is seen when lightening strikes during the monsoon period. The surface of the Earth has a negative electrical potential, whereas the ionosphere has a positive electrical potential of about 50,000 volts. However, these electric currents are extremely small. Due to the laws of electrostatics, near the surface, the potential gradient differs greatly. It is highest on mountains and in dry conditions where it can reach 1000 volts per meter, while in low-lying and moist conditions it falls to below 50 volts. We are all familiar how car battery becomes weak during monsoon days due to insulation leakages and short circuit fires during monsoons.. Pointed objects such as spires on lightening arresters attract large potential gradients as per electrostatic laws which also give rise to ozone formation if oxygen is readily available. Our ancestors and acharyas knew the positive effects of such gradients on health, which is why most of the important temples and meditation centres are built on hill-tops. Populations with exceptionally long life spans always seem to live in the mountains such as the Himalayas. The growth of several important medicinal plants in these mountains also occurs due to unpolluted and purer cosmic radiational energy, as discussed on posts on bio-dynamic farming earlier in this group. In buildings with roofs of metal or steel-reinforced concrete, this energy field is almost zero. Even worse are those houses that also have metal walls, whether they are of corrugated iron, coating or insulation material with aluminum, wire mesh or reinforced concrete. This near zero field occurs due to the earthing of the house caused by the structural steel. This author, in his childhood, always wondered why petrol tankers had steel chains at the rear of the chassis, the chains themselves dragging against the surface of road while tanker was in motion. Now he understands that the purpose of these chains was to ground the tanker body to avoid the danger of spontaneous combustion, the same type of spontaneous combustion which caused the terrible death of Mary Richter as mentioned in the previous post in this series,. In his high school days, the author used to wonder why churches had lightening arresters, when temples had none, and were built mostly of stone with special domes to concentrate the electric potential gradients. Was it that Indians were not afraid of lightening or just that the architects of such temples were not aware of the subject of electrostatics? In a high-electrostatic field, our wellness and mental abilities are increased, while in a low energy field we easily become fatigued and our concentration suffers. When sky darkens due to monsoon clouds, our mood becomes melancholy due to both poor light and reduced electric field. That is why temples have high tapered roofs with no arresters against lightening. In fact some rich kings donated gold cones to fit at the dome-tip of temples so that a concentrated charge could build up. Electrodes that produce a field of 1000-2000 volts inside offices and houses have been used with good results in Germany. If we live in a conventional modern house, it would be preferable to at least have the bedroom or sleeping place free from shielding metals or possibly sleep on the veranda in summer. This is especially important for someone with a serious chronic disease. If you visit an Indian village, those who can afford it will always have a veranda to sleep on in wooden cots in the summer. The terraces of city buildings are still available for the adventurous who live there. Try it and see how much more relaxing and how much deeper your sleep is, provided that the city noise is not too disturbing. Another effect of the static field is the possible imbalance in the ion distribution in the body when one habitually wears rubber soles shoes. Walking barefoot, especially on fresh or wet grass on the other hand, allows our inner polarity to naturally readjust itself. It may be recalled that a traditional simple remedy for pacifying pitta is to walk barefoot on grass wet with early morning dew (post #2077) and Hira Ratan Manek, who lives only on solar energy, also advises walking barefoot in moderate light (see http://sungazing.com) 2. Electromagnetic pollution: Most of us are familiar with noise pollution. Similarly, strong alternative electromagnetic fields of about 50 to 60 Hz, depending on which part of globe we are in, are also harmful to us. These energy fields exist around high voltage transmission lines, power tools, electric stoves, heaters, boilers, freezers, television sets and computer monitors when in use and extend several feet, sometimes even yards, around each appliance. The strength of the field of a TV set can be judged by holding your palm about 6 inches away from the screen. If we are listening to a nice piece of music on the radio, that familiar interference noise that happens when the kitchen blender is turned on, proves the existence of the phenomenon termed as electro-magnetic interference. This phenomenon is also the reason that we are asked to switch off cell phones during plane flights. In the same way, spacecraft which carry a launcher have to remain closed, i.e. receive no commands from or transmit telemetry data to its control room, when its launch is in progress. We also should stay away from equipment which generates electromagnetic noise, if at all possible. Most of the processing of the liver to produce higher dhatus from the food we eat goes on during night. In fact it is believed that weight gain occurs during the night. Those who sleep well, get up fresh and early in the morning, are far less likely to suffer from obesity than those who do not get to sleep until late and wake up with a headache, uneasiness or fatigue, traditional signs of pitta vitiation and the most likely candidates for obesity. Yes! "Early to bed, early to rise", is the key to keeping a check on obesity and several other health problems. Try to minimize electromagnetic pollution, especially while sleeping, when the pineal gland is most susceptible, by sleeping in the dark, or at least covering eyes to produce the immune-stimulating hormone melatonin. Switch off all power points and unplug all electric leads with 2-pin plugs in the bedroom before going to sleep, watch that there are no live electric wires inside the wall near the head and try to sleep with the head in a northerly or easterly direction. The effect of negative ions emitted by window air conditioners is already discussed in an earlier post in this series. Many blood cancer cases come from slum areas where high voltage power transmission lines cross above them. In fact a typical hum can be heard from these power lines due to the corona effect underneath them. Slum dwellers are neither aware of these health risks nor are warned about them by the authorities. 3. Terrestrial Magnetic Field The magnetic field strength of the Earth is about 0.5 gauss. It has been much higher in the past and is presently still decreasing. The effect of magnetic field on our health has given rise to a branch of alternative medicine termed Magneto-Therapy. We will not discuss this therapy at length here since there are special for this purpose. The changes in the magnetic field caused by solar activity has been an important area of research, as mentioned in Post # 6733. Generally, life forms are bigger, more vital and longer living in a stronger magnetic field. The truth in this statement can be understood by comparing those living close to the equator with those living closer to the poles. Most people will find it best to sleep with the head in a northerly direction, while an easterly direction is sometimes beneficial; facing towards the west, however, is often weakening. In the southern hemisphere try also sleeping with the head to the south. Experiment to find the best direction for yourself. Each individual is unique, with a unique aura and a unique bio-magnetic strength, each with his own unique requirements. The philosophy of ayurveda is more concerned with living healthily in a natural environment in harmony with the fundamental elements of nature rather than needing to cure a disease with herbs. Even if in the animal and plant kingdoms there is a need for one species to destroy another, there is no need for man to live in this way. After all, man is capable of choosing to live harmoniously with the elements in nature, he can choose to survive with the 'live and let live' principle, following nature's nurturing side in the same way that some animal species might adopt and nurture the young of other species, he does not have to follow the example of the tiger stalking his prey or the strangling impact of ivy on the unresisting tree. We will next look at light energies when we continue dealing with cellular nutrients. Editing help from Jane MacRoss is gratefully acknowledged.
