Guest guest Report post Posted May 31, 2006 SAI RAM, Upanishads are a part of Vedas. They contain the essence or the knowledge portion of the Vedas. Each Veda consists of four parts:- 1.The Mantra Samhitas or hymns. 2.The Brahmanas or Explanations of Mantras or rituals. 3.The Aranyakas containing philosophical interpretations of the rituals. and 4.The Upanishads The division of the Vedas as above, some opine, corresponds to the four Ashramas of Sanatana Dharma viz., Brahmacharya, Grihasta, Vanaprasta and Sanyasa. This does not necessarily mean that Upanishads are meant for Sanyasins only. Not at all. In fact vedas are studied by brahmacharins. A thorough and indepth study of Upanishads is a pre-requisite for Sanyasa Ashramam. While Vedas are all-comprehensive, Upanishads deal only with Spiritual Knowledge. The philosophy of the Upanishads is sublime, profound, lofty and, so to say, soul-stirring. The Upanishads speak of the identity of the individual soul and the Supreme soul. Another division of the Vedas is as follows:- 1.Karma Kanda or ritualistic section 2.Upasana Kanda or worship sectionand 3.Jnana Kanda or Knowledge section corresponding to Upanishads. One explanation given by Swami on the difference between Vedas and Upanishads is that Vedas see God as seperate from the individual being and is thus clasified as " Dawitham" whereas Upanishads expounds the principle of " Adwitham", the great mahavakyas like " Aham Bramaham Asami". There are three parts in vedas like " Varnana" ( describing the Lord) "Dhayna"( Meditating on the described divine aspects of the Lord) and "Prarthana"( Praying to the lord to bestow blessings). Upanishads extols the unity of the individual soul and the supreme soul. This is what I understood from one of Swami's discourses.
