Guest guest
[An Indian naturopath suggests "whey" for a kidney cleanse. Whey is the plain slightly yellowish green liquid which gets separated from milk when you heat it slightly and then squeeze a lemon into it to cause it to scatter. I do not know whether to use it hot or cold or in what quantity. Can anyone help? - Jagannath] Useful Dietary & Herbal Remedies for Kidney Function JoAnn Guest May 27, 2006 15:29 PDT Kidney disease may be congenital (polycystic kidney), autoimmune- relatedwith an inherited component (glomerulonephritis), or the result of infection (pyelonephritis), injury, or hypertension. Left untreated, kidney failure will be fatal, and the treatments for it -- dialysis and kidney transplantation -- are far from easy or pleasant. When patients are already in frank kidney failure, conventional doctorswarn them to avoid eating animal protein and other habits that put stress on whatever functional kidney tissue remains. If patients had this information much earlier, they might be able to avoid the drastic interventions. Here are the most common kidney stressors: tobacco smoking - which cutsdown blood flow to the organs, high blood pressure, dehydration, alcohol, caffeine and other stimulant drugs, jarring motion - as in running or horseback riding, and a high-protein diet. The metabolism of animal protein puts a huge workload on the kidneys. If you know that you have abnormal kidneys or have had any kidney disease in the past, the two most important things you can do to protect yourself are to follow a very low-protein diet and never allow yourself to become dehydrated. Dr. Andrew Weil, Ph.D. www.drweil.com - Dietary and Herbal Remedies for Kidney Function JoAnn Guest Aug 11, 2003 21:25 PDT Consume a diet composed of 75 percent raw foods. Include fresh garlic, organic potatoes, asparagus, parsley, watermelon, celery, cucumbers, papaya (non-gmo) and bananas in your diet. Watermelon and raw pumpkin seeds are also beneficial. Eden foods offers a delicious variety of spicy pumpkin seeds! Umm...love em! http://www.edenfoods.com/store/advanced_search_result.php? keywords=spicy+pumpkin+seeds&is_basic_search=1&Search_button.x=19&Sea rch_button.y=11 Watermelon should be eaten by itself so that it passes through the system quickly. Also you can eat organic sprouts and most organic green vegetables. Include in your diet legumes, dried beans, raw seeds, and organic fermented soybeans (tofu, etc). These foods contain the amino acid "arginine", which is beneficial for the kidneys. ` Reduce your intake of potassium and phosphates. Do not use even minimal amounts of refined salt or potassium chloride, a salt substitutive. Herbamare a natural herb and garlic blend provides a tasty substitute for refined salt. You can use it for all your cooking and baking needs and as a condiment at the table. Avoid beet greens, chocolate (dark and white), cocoa (even unprocessed), eggs, meat, rhubarb, Swiss chard, coffee (even decaf) and caffeinated tea. Herbal tea is fine. Drink six to eight ounces of steam distilled water every waking hour. Quality (pure) water free of fluorides and other chemicals is essential for good urinary tract function. Cut down intake of protein ( organic and free range as well) ), or preferably to facilitate recovery, eliminate it altogether. A diet high in animal proteins adds to the stress and workload already on the kidneys. Excess accumulation of protein results in"uremia". Other plant protein sources include blackeyed peas, cooked dried beans, lentils, millet, organic soybeans, millet, amaranth, bulgur, kamut and other whole grains. Avoid diary products (even lowfat, which is even more difficult to eliminate - due to homogenization and other unnatural processing and lack of fats needed to digest)except for organic soured varieties, suchas homemade organic buttermilk, organic yogurt and cottage cheese. Try a raw goat's milk diet for two weeks, consuming nothing but 4 quartsof raw goat's milk, warmed to body temperature, each day. Add 1 tablespoon of crude organic blackstrap molasses to each quart. During this priod take 1,000 IUs of vitamin E and 75,000 IUs of vitamin A emulsion. Go on a three day cleansing and organic (fresh squeezed)juice fast, and make use of coffee or catnip tea enemas. If you are taking antibiotics for kidney problems do not take iron supplements as long as the problem exists. Lead and other metallic poisons are very harmful to the kidneys. A studyat the pharmaceutical department of Chiba University in Japan foundthat spirulina reduced kidney poisoning caused by mercury and drugs. Researchers discovered that adverse effects of certain drugs on the kidneys also may be decreased by the use of spirulina. High doses of the painkiller ibuprofen, (Advil, Nuprin, and others) canlead to kidney dysfunction. Beneficial Herbs - Celery and parsley seeds are natural diuretics. These two herbs helpkeep uric acid levels in check. Cranberries contain substances that acidify the urine, destroy bacteriabuildup and promote healing of the bladder. Drink at least 8 ounces of cranberry juice, three times daily. Use only pure, unsweetened juice from your health food store or natural grocery. Do not substitute a commercial cranberry juice cocktail product, they invariably contain large amounts of refined sugar which immobilizes your immune system and in that way hinders any healing effects you may derive from it. If natural cranberry juice is not available, cranberry tablets or capsules can be and effective substitute. Dandelion root extract aids in excretion of the kidney's waste productsand is especically beneficial for nephritis. The herbs hydrangea and uva ursi are excellent " natural diuretics" One ofthe best first steps in cleaning out the urinary tract and keepingithealthy is to help it flush itself. Voiding the urinary tract keeps harmful deposits of calcium or other mineral salts from forming obstructions. Uva ursi is also slightly"germicidal"so if there are any bacteria present, they will likely be destroyed by it. Marshmallow (herbal) tea helps to cleanse the kidneys. Drink 1 quartdaily. SP-6 Cornsilk blend helps reduce"water retention" KB formula is also a good herbal diuretic. Other herbs that are beneficial for kidney problems include goldenrod tea, juniper berries, marshmallow root, nettle, parsley, red clover, and watermelon seed tea. I prefer red clover, nettle, jumipter, uva ussi and watermelon or marshmallow root tea myself. Make good use of parsley in your diet. Tabbouleh - the middle eastern dish containing large amounts of cucumber and parsley is fantastic for obtaining optimum amounts of these herbs in your daily diet. --- Dandelion --- http://www.demetria.com/herbmonth/herbmonth.asp Actions Diuretic, hepatic, cholagogue, anti-rheumatic, laxative, tonic, bitter. Parts Used: Root or leaf Dandelion leaf is a very powerful diuretic, its action comparable to that of the drug (diuretic)`Furosemide'. Unlike the drug Dandelion does not"drain"the body of vital potassium while acting as a diuretic. Dandelion is one of the best sources of natural potassium. Dandelion root may be used in inflammation and congestion of liver, kidneys and gall-bladder. It is specific in cases of congestive jaundice. As part of a wider treatment for muscular rheumatism it can be most effective. Thisherbis a most valuable general tonic and perhaps the best widely applicable *diuretic* and liver tonic.
